Last week was the beginning of a new semester. This means I have a new schedule, new classes, new instructors, and new communities. This semester I am particularly excited about my classes. Now is the time where I start focusing in on classes that interest me and my career and what I want to do in the future. However, there is one class I was dreading a little and was nervous about. ENG100. Scary right? Having to write pointless essays all semester over topics that aren’t interesting? But after the first class, this assumption soon flipped. I walked out of the classroom being the most excited I have ever been about an English course.
Ms. Williams brought to the surface the thought of community and how important it is especially in a college environment. My point to this week’s post is that everyone should not underestimate the power of community and the feeling of belonging to a group in which you have similarities with. Whether it be your religion, gender, hobbies, Greek community, or your majors. Communities are all around and in my opinion, it only benefits to try and join them.
I am beyond excited for this semester because of the feeling of actually wanting to go to a class that interests myself and gives me an outlet to prepare for what I want to do in the future. The funny part about it all is that I used to hate writing and never really found interest in it. But I guess I have a little bit of my maternal grandfather who was a journalist after college. A little advice to those who aren’t sure what their passion is… don’t knock it until you really try it. Give different things a chance that maybe other people in your family enjoy. You could surprise yourself.
