For many college students, spring break means a road trip with friends to the beach for a full week of binge drinking and wild partying. Sure, sounds fun and all, but going home for break is underrated. While it may be a very different sort of fun, going home can actually be a great time in a lot of ways.
To get the most obvious advantage out of the way, going home saves a ton of money. That week of funneling beers is nowhere close to cheap. The cost of driving/flying there and back, finding a place to stay, going out to eat, and not to mention the ungodly amount of alcohol all adds up fast. Spending the week with your family probably isn’t going to be as fun, but at least they’re probably not going to charge you for anything either. As a broke college kid, your wallet will definitely thank you for this one.
Your parents will thank you too, especially if you’ve made empty nesters of them. Even if you haven’t always seen eye to eye or argue sometimes, they miss you. You spent the first 18 years of your life with them and no matter how ready you were to leave, it was hard for them to let you go. You get to spend most of your year having fun with your friends and doing almost exactly what you’d be doing on a spring break trip anyway, so why not let this one go to your family? Plus, chances are they can cook a much better meal than anything you could get at the dining halls.
High school might seem a long ways away at this point, but it wasn’t too long ago that you and your friends were messing around in the cafeteria, going to proms, and doing anything and everything typical of the high school experience. Spring Break is a great time to relive those days with some of your oldest and best friends. There are way too many wild stories to catch up on to miss out on anyway.
When you’re not spending time with your friends or family, the rest of the time is yours! You can rewatch the Office as many times as you want without judgment. With endless free snacks. You even get to cuddle up with your dog. If you have homework (which you totally shouldn’t, it’s called a break for a reason), you can actually get it done. We all know nobody at Myrtle or Daytona Beach is getting theirs done.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you to choose how to spend your spring break. There’s nothing wrong with going all out, but there’s nothing wrong with going home either. Going home can actually be a great option, especially if you’re strapped for cash. Your friends and family would love to see you and you can get in some much-needed relaxation too.
