Comedic Analysis: Donald Glover's Cereal Routine

Donald Glover, though he is a unique performer with a wide range of talents, shares a similar quality with the likes of Kevin Hart, Neil De Gras Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, and even myself: he was raised by a black mom.

Black moms are different in that the love they give to their children is seen as harsher and more real world oriented. They follow a similar (but not identical) ideology of an Asian "Tiger mom". Tiger moms essentially drive the upbringing of children in a society where high exam scores is also equal to a high success rate. This in turn leads to a hardwired regimen for the child with demanding requirements to meet. Though African American mothers don't dictate that far, they also want their children to grow up a certain way. This is shown by push them to a higher standard in terms of academics, character, and respect.

"My mom is crazy" when said by a white kid means Jimmy's phone got taken away for the evening because he chose to text at the dinner table or Mary wasn't allowed to attend a One Direction concert, which then resulted in a 20 minute screaming match (Mary probably said "I hate you" a good deal of times before she was grounded).

"My mom is crazy" from a black child means Darnell probably got beat with a coffee table the night before because he was told to put his phone away one to many times. The phone then probably got taken away and given to Good Will. Tisha, who wanted to go to a Future concert, wasn't able to do anything that night because she talked back. She didn't pass go, she didn't get her 200, she hasn't left her room in about 5 days because her mom slapped her into next week.

Recently becoming the first African American to win an Emmy for comedy sketch writing, Glover exemplifies the idea of " A Black Mother's Love" in his comedy special, Weirdo, when cracked the funniest joke in the set.

He set the joke up by talking about his brother is in love with sugar, but sugary cereals weren't allowed in their household while growing up. The cereals they did have were Kix and "cardboard doodoo" (otherwise known as cheerios). He then goes on to describe Kix in a very fitting and hilarious manner: From Donald Glover's Hilarious Show "Weirdo"

One day, his mother breaks, finally buying them Cocoa Puffs while shopping. His mother then did "the most devious thing I have ever seen anybody ever do" As Glover phrased it. She took a standard Tupperware container, poured a minuscule amount of Cocoa Puffs, and then fills the rest of the container with Kix. His brother, while crying, still eats the cereal without reprisal because he knew it was at that point, he had lost the war, and he would fall to his sugary vices.

Black moms are truly savages that go the extra mile to get their point across. When examining the joke, it wasn't necessary to buy a whole box of Cocoa puffs just to mix it in with the Kix. Another mom would've simply just purchased another box of the hand-job cereal, or gotten the cocoa puffs and let the boys enjoy their reward for their efforts to obtain Cocoa Puff's sugary goodness. Instead, Glover's mom took it to next level to demonstrate crucial a life lesson at an age while minds are still developing: life isn't fair.

A lot of people get the idea of "black mom" from mainstream entertainment and pop culture. For example, Rochelle from the show "Everybody hates Chris" is often times seen mad, loud, and disciplining one of the children. Another example can be found Eddie Murphy's stand up show Delirious. It's here Eddie talks about his mom's shoe throwing ability and how it had the same swiftness and precision as Clint Eastwood drawing his revolver.

The same idea applies when building up the idea of a "white mom" in shows such as "That 70's Show" or "The Brady Bunch". Most people just assume that an African American mom's behavior, much like a Caucasian mom's behavior, is integrated into our culture when in reality there are 2 very key components (one intercultural and one societal) to think about when we ask ourselves "Why do black moms go so hard on their kids?"

One main reason is because often times, an African American mother is required to play both the role of an authoritarian figure in absence of a father as well as a nurturer and caregiver as mother's typically do. Though this problem doesn't apply to Glover, this factor has contributed to the tough love aspect for generations, creating it into both an expectation from outside races as well as a common aspect of most African American families.

As reported by NewsOnes in 2009, 25% of all children in that year were currently growing up in single parent households. When examining the African American community alone however, that number skyrockets to 72%,with an overwhelming amount of those parents being mothers.

More statistics come to a similar conclusion. A 2015 study conducted by Children Trends Data Bank shows 2 separate but equally supportive statistics: only 34% of African American households consist of 2 parents, which is the lowest number when compared to any other race; African Americans have the highest number of single mother households when compared to other races at a jaw dropping 49%.

The second reason for the seemingly pointless rough treatment of African American children is simply because African American mothers are aware of the harsh road that faces there children ahead. This idea has been instilled in the African American community since the 1900s, with prospects of sharecropping to aid former slaves as well as Jim Crow laws that maintained the "separate but equal" standpoint and so forth. It's with this Glover's joke shows how little the mindset of blacks living in America has changed, and while we do progress as a race in a positive direction, we as a race haven't forgotten the past.

That past also includes the numerous African American heroes who laid their lives on the line just so future generations could be afforded opportunities to be successful. Its amazing leaders and role models like this that continue to inspire us. The work African Americans have done is remarkable, even before 1865; No African American mother on this planet will let your heritage fall to the waste side.

The African American community itself, however, is not the sources of this pressure. This mindset and standard we as a race have set for "striving" comes from how black moms feel as though their kids will be perceived from an outside world when stacked up other non-blacks. Though we have moved into a new era of American life, we have also moved into a new area of prejudice as do most races. In the case of an African Americans, impoverishment (which is an issue more than 45% of African American children as of 2010) is often linked with words such as "hooligan" or "undisciplined", and leads to outside races expecting just that from us. Followed by that are disparaging statics such as:

African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites
- NAACP

This is the first of several statistics that point towards racial biases and lie in correlation with preconceived notions of how we act as a race. After looking at more facts, it becomes more telling how difficult it is for an African American to succeed in our current situation. For example, the following statistics go hand and hand:

"African Americans and whites use drugs at similar rates, but the imprisonment rate of African Americans for drug charges is almost 6 times that of whites"

Now couple that with the fact that:

"A criminal record can reduce the likelihood of a callback or job offer by nearly 50 percent and the negative impact of a criminal record is twice as large for African American applicants"

(Both facts cited from the NAACP Criminal Facts sheet)

You see that mathematically speaking it is exponentially harder for African Americans to get hired in a higher level work place than a white person.

Beyond that, tragedies such as the Trayvon Martin incident, Jason Stockley being acquitted, and countless other complications the African American community has faced in the last number of years not only make the African American population feel unsafe, but also unwanted.

African American mothers, when taking all factors into account, know that the world is going to be tough on whomever they choose to bring into it, that partially being because of the color of their skin. The demographic themselves already have it tough being both of color and women in today's society. The harsh love they give is nothing more than them showing how badly they want their kid to do well. A Tiger Mom wants her child to grow up to outside expectation whereas an African American mom wants their child to grow up away from outside expectation.

On a personal note, being an African American in this day and age has never been more difficult. My mom is the hardest working person in my life, and her ambition inspires me more than anyone ever could. Everyday she feeds me and loves me is another day she's telling me in her own way to go out and only perform to be the very best I can.

Glover though he didn't get the cereal in the quantity he had hoped for, shows that from the rubble of stereotypes and statistics, African Americans are still striving for greatness.

The strive starts not when you sign your first contract, or make your dream happen. Rather, it begins when you got popped for talking back, or scolded for continuously for opening or closing the screen door, or even when your misbehavior at school causes you to have to cancel your birthday party. It starts with a black mother's love.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
