We have all spent the last semester counting down the days until summer. We want to be able to relax, spend time with friends, and watch Netflix, however, when summer comes around we realize how these thoughts were just wishful thinking. Here are some college expectations vs. realities.
1. You will spend time with your friends.
Going into the summer you think this would be an amazing time to catch up with your friends from home or your high school friends. What you might not realize is that your friends most likely have to work so they can either start paying off their student loans or saving up for rent the next semester. You probably won't be spending as much time with them as you may think.
2. You will spend your days in bed watching Netflix.
Unless your parents pay for your college, you will probably have to get a job over the summer just like your friends. Unfortunately, college is crazy expensive and saving up is needed. I thought that I was going to do this for the first couple weeks this summer even, but my work schedule and my continually growing list of things to do would say otherwise.
3. You think you will go to the beach or the pool all the time.
I said this last year about going to the pool that is in my housing development. I thought that would be a great opportunity to cool down and tan. I only went a couple times throughout the entire summer. There are either other more pressing things to do or I am just too tired to go to the pool after work.
4. You will go on amazing exotic trips.
Maybe you had planned a trip going somewhere out of the country that would be new and exciting and you had been looking forward to it all semester. By the time the summer actually gets here and you have the freedom to go on a trip, you are broke and can't afford to fly - because let's face it - flying is really expensive.
Overall, college summers are absolutely nothing like high school summers. During the summers in high school, you didn't really have to worry about your finances and if you did work it was either saving up for college down the line or buying something that you really wanted. If your college summer is anything like mine, it doesn't really seem like it's summer.
