A College Student's Gratitude List

What I am grateful for has changed since beginning college.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I have come to realize that the list of things I am grateful for has changed since beginning my college experience. Here are some things I have discovered make us college kids feel #blessed:

1. My parents

This should be on your gratitude list regardless of your age, but I think it is especially true for college students. Chances are that they are one of the reasons you are able to attend college at all, and they are there for you through anything that life throws at you while you are away.

2. Power strips

You truly do not realize how much you need to plug in until you move into a dorm. Thank God electricity is included in room and board!

3. Cancelled classes

Quite possibly the best email to wake up to, to receive before bed as you are scrambling to do the homework due that class, or to receive at any time of day.

4. Command hooks

Your tiny dorm room would be so boring without countless decorations, hung with the help of Command hooks.

5. Unlimited swipes

Want a coffee? In the mood to steal a croissant? Just need a place to work for a while? Thank God for unlimited swipes.

6. Netflix

How else would I possibly spend every free moment? Most of my math skills are put to use when I try to figure out if I can fit a full episode between classes.

7. Free laundry

I am nearly certain that if I had to pay for laundry, it would simply not get done.

8. Tide Pods

These ingenious inventions make life so much easier, by saving us from having to lug a bottle of detergent. They're great until they do not fully dissolve and end up exploding all over your clothes. I still love them, though.

9. FaceTime

How else would I be able to hear all of my long-distance friends’ stories and drama or be able see my family?

10. Spotify

Thanks for letting us make a playlist for virtually any mood. Spotify makes my walk to class a whole lot more enjoyable.

11. Portable Chargers

Why do phones seem to die so much faster in college? I do not know what I would do without my portable charger to save me in the middle of class or when I am out and about.

12. Bean Boots

Happy bean boot weather! Thanks, L.L. Bean, for making such trendy and durable pairs of boots.

13. School gear

You truly have not seen lazy outfits until you get to college… Especially if you have an early class. Sweatpants and sweatshirt are an acceptable outfit in most situations, and you get bonus points if it is college gear.

14. Finally going home

I love being at school, but nothing compares to the bliss of returning home. Showering without flip flops, sleeping in my queen sized bed, brushing my teeth after I eat instead of before heading to the dining hall, and having cable are among the best parts of going home for a break.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
