The College Student Vs. The Summer Job

This is just the beginning of working our lives away, right?

For most college students, working is already a necessity. Rent, tuition, car payments on a shitty car that gets about thirteen miles to the gallon, (and let's not forget those not-so-cheap $350 lollapalooza four-day passes that you NEEDED to get), it all adds up, doesn't it? We all have probably come to the conclusion by now that this is just the beginning of working our lives away, right?

During the school year, working may seem like an impossible task to accomplish. Between the 475 papers you have to write, the 637 books you have to read, AND balancing a social life, it feels nearly impossible. But, you're a broke college student - that says it all. When May rolls around and school starts coming to an end, you think to yourself “wow, I can't wait for summer! Sleeping in, hanging with my friends, going on vacation..” Well, sorry guys. As a college student, summer is now for internships, jobs, work, and how to make money to pay back your parents for the hundreds of times you called and said “Dad? can you send me 20 bucks, I only have $3.62 in my bank account.” Having finished my freshman year of college, a year where I really did learn the value of productivity, I have accepted the fact that my summer is going to revolve around accomplishing such things.

But, this is SUMMER people. Ice cream needs scooping, pools need guarding, and campers need counseling. The jobs you get definitely do not have to be inside working at a desk or on a computer. Get a lifeguarding position and get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather, work at an ice cream place with the employee perk of getting free ice cream all the time, or be a camp counselor and show those little kids that a nineteen-year-old broke college student can still have fun! And hey, if working on roller skates at Sonic is what you want to do, you go for it. Summer jobs really can be a good time, you just have to find one that fits you.

I know I know, you would much rather be kicked back in a chair on the beach basking in the warm sun. Well, I have some good news. This is summer, and summer is what we “kids” live for. It may feel like these jobs and internships take up every second of your time. But, although we all have our fair share of duties and responsibilities, there will be time to go on an awesome trip with your best friends, go to that rockin’ concert you have been waiting months for, or just to relax on a beach somewhere sunny and 75. While it can be a real challenge to focus on something like a job in the middle of June, we just have to keep in mind that hey, we are still allowed to have fun. Summer 16’ is upon us people. Make the most of it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
