14 College Experiences Former Boarding School Students Must Endure

Sadly, no, my dorm parents didn't eat ravioli cold from a can, and they didn't turn into cats. But I did have prefects and they were awesome!

A lot of of boarding school kids worry that when they go away to college, the experience will be anti-climatic or that it will be like boarding school 2.0. For those incoming freshmen, I am here to dispel that myth, and to show that college will definitely have some unique moments of its own. Although we all have different stories to tell, here are a few thoughts I'm pretty sure all of us boarding school grads have felt at one time or another. For those of you who haven't attended boarding school, this is a fresh peak inside the mind of a boarding school student in college.

You ask your roommate about lights out on the first day

True story, this happened. Not with me of course...

You find it incredible that there is no sign-out procedure

Is this what freedom is?!

You make your bed every day out of habit

And your parents couldn't be prouder of you.

You're equally shocked and terrified that there is no set study hall

When are you going to ever find the time to do your assignments?

You feel like a small fish in big waters

My entire school is like 1/5 the size of my entire year now. And what are "lectures" even?! I can't believe so many students can fit in one room at one time.

You don't feel homesickness as strongly as your friends

Been there, done that. Now you can help your friends going through this struggle. It'll be okay...

You find it a shame that you don't know half the kids in on your floor

My entire dorm was the same size as this hallway, and I don't know any of you people.

You find it hard to turn your back on the preppy fashion trends that you've grown to love so much

I didn't choose the preppy life... The preppy life chose me...

As weird as it may seem to your friends, you find it kind of sad that your professors don't live with you

Y'all don't understand how much dorm snack made my life amazing and how much I depended on a live-in calc tutor senior year (I'm looking at you, Mr. Turner).

On the other hand, it's pretty great that your professors don't live with you

I think I'm willing to give up living with my dorm parents' dogs for this... Finally, my room isn't being monitored 24/7. And I can't believe there's a boy in my room right now!

You are way more comfortable taking your clothes off in front of your roommate than they are in front of you

Sorry, I know we just met two hours ago, but I really needed to take my shirt off...

You find yourself comparing every moment of college to high school

After day two of orientation, your new friends are probably tired of hearing about your high school dorms and high school food and high school sports... But the memories are so hard to get rid of!

Midterms that are actually during the middle of the term come as a huge shock

Wait, it's not December yet! It's only October! How is it midterms already?! Why?! How did this happen?!

You get asked constantly if life was like Pacific Coast Academy or Hogwarts

Sadly, no, my dorm parents didn't eat ravioli cold from a can, and they didn't turn into cats. But I did have prefects and they were awesome!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
