For many years, I struggled with maintaining a positive mindset. Having an education and social life was difficult to manage, but over time I had realized that both are necessary to fully enjoy a happy and healthy life. Attending college was one of the best decisions that I ever made. Before transferring to Stony Brook University, I got a sample of campus life from the time I spent at Suffolk County Community College to get my Associate's Degree. To calm my nerves, I reminded myself that each day is a new adventure. This gave me the motivation to study hard while finding time to participate in extracurricular activities.
One year later, I remember getting the biggest smile after finding out I was accepted to Stony Brook University. During my first semester, I did not participate as much because I wanted to concentrate on my studies. The following semester I got more involved with clubs. Even though I had to commute, the distance was not far so I did not mind the trips to attend the weekly meetings when time permitted.
The organizations improved my communication and teamwork skills. I also made some new friends. I enjoyed getting to know everyone and talking about our majors and interests. It always felt good when I took the time to volunteer for sales or fundraisers and gave money towards a good cause or helped with events and workshops on campus. Knowing that I was doing random acts of kindness and giving back to the university helped me increase my confidence during my first year.
By the time that I got to my senior year at Stony Brook University, I did not forget the lessons that I was taught, not only from my professors but from my family and friends as well. While college was challenging, I was able to keep moving forward thanks to the support that I received. Before graduating, there were so many things that I accomplished. I did an internship where I assisted with a virtual reality tour. I also got my artworks accepted into the Senior Show and received an award for one of my submissions the same day as the Commencement ceremony.
After graduating, I'm still learning things and improving as an individual. You never do stop learning. There is always something new to discover, read and improve on. College helped me to prepare for the world that I am no longer afraid to face. I still keep in contact with my friends from Stony Brook University, while continuing to work on my skills, and manage my physical and mental health.
I want to say thank you to my family, friends, and professors for believing in me. Their encouragement got me through days when I felt unmotivated. I'm not sure what the journey ahead will be like. However, I realized that by staying focused, keeping calm, and maintaining a positive attitude, I can accomplish anything, just like how I did during my time at college.
