Going Out? 6 Tips To Make You Feel Like A Fashionista at College Parties
Desrean Smith

Have you ever accepted your friend's request to go out, but you look in the closet wondering, "what in the world am I wearing tonight?"

Throughout my freshman year from tailgates to dinner parties to downtown trips, I've had my plenty of time to figure out what items work and what did not in terms of attending college parties.

After a year, let me share a few tips on how to look straight fire when you're partying.

1. Shoes made for dancing

The most important topic when you are trying to wear to go out is (you guessed it) shoes. What I look for in a party shoe is: comfort, durability, and is it worth getting them ruined. You are on your feet all day and night and your precious feet should not hurt because your shoes are uncomfortable.

Don't wear stiletto heels to a function and end up twisting your ankle. Yes, buy your shoes in a comfortable price range, but don't wear shoes busted enough for it to break in one time. Then, don't pay no more than $30-$60 on party shoes because over $60 = difficult to replace.

Flatforms (flats+platforms) are perfect for going out because not only they give you height, especially for shorties like me, but they are comfortable to walk in for a long time and they prevent your precious feet from getting dirty. I also love wearing sneakers and booties because what are more comfortable than wearing them?

2. Tanks for summer

During the summertime, whether if it's outside or inside it gets hot, musty, and humid real quick. Wear tank tops because they free your arms while dancing so you won't feel constricted. SheIn, Forever 21, and the clearance section of H&M have unique tank tops for under $15. And so does Amazon!

Year-round, blouses are perfect for going out. Look for lightweight fabrics because the sleeves cover your skin for chilly days, but leave room for air when it's sweaty and humid. Ruffle, bell, and cinch sleeves are stylish options as well as button down tops. Off the shoulder styles show off some skin; make one with an oversized button down top by buttoning the bottom part of the top and drape the collar part off the shoulders.

Sweaters for winter

During the wintertime, buildings can get hot, but it's freezing cold on the outside. Because there are no places in the club or the house (unless it is a personal home- not a frat house), coats are probably a no-go for indoor parties unless you want them tied to your waist the entire time.

I love wearing cute sweaters for those times when it gets cold. Never sleep on TJ Maxx as during the fall and winter they always have unique sweater for under $25. Same goes for Amazon.

3. What goes on the bottom

Jeans are a popular staple for going out, especially in the casual world. If you feel like a baddie, ripped denim or cutoff shorts fit the mood with a graphic tee or a feminine top to add the spunk. For a sophisticated look, bell bottoms, flared hem, or fringed hem jeans add some girliness and you will get racked up with compliments.

Skirts/skorts are another going out staple you need. My favorite styles to wear going are wrap skirt, ruffle bottom, and denim as they come in different styles, prints, and colors to go with any top. These choices add the right amount of skin and girliness to the outfit.

Co-ord sets are here to stay, and they are ideal for deciding to wear a top and bottom for you. If you ever get a chance to buy co-ord sets with a 2-for-1-price deal, do it! Then you can always mix and match with different pieces for other times.

4. Decorate it up and make it real

Jewelry speaks a lot when you put together outfits for going out. Statement earrings are very popular pieces of jewelry for going out. Tassels and pom pom earrings are great options for a feminine look. If you want a little edge to your look, geometric earrings are perfect.

Chokers are still around, but I love metallic chokers as they go with everything. My all-time favorite metallic choker to go out and about is my star choker. I also love this circle choker.

5. Secure the bag when you're out

Before going out, ALWAYS carry a small cross body bag, or if you feel over the top a fanny pack. I always depend on finding cute small bags from Nine West because the styles and colors are sure to go with your outfits. All you need to put in the bag are keys, mini perfume, chapstick, money, phone, a small portable charger, your ID, and if necessary birth control.

Does this create a picture in your mind what you want to wear tonight? Good. Hopefully, you've picked your outfit to go out to any night-time activities.

Now you look party-appropriate to dance the night away with your bestie/#girlgang.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
