The College of Charleston, or better known as America's most beautiful college campus, is a concoction of diversity, academics, and historic scenery. The historic scenery originates from the founding of the college in 1770. It happens to be the oldest college south of Virginia and 13th oldest in the United States. The beautiful simplicity of the city of Charleston also gives the college a more city-like feel. Also, the diversity of Charleston is one of the factors that makes Charleston the greatest city, in my opinion.
1. America's Most Beautiful Campus
Many college students claim that their campus is the most beautiful, but the students at College of Charleston can provide evidence for their claim. As of 2016, the college was voted as having the most beautiful campus in America by Travel + Leisure. The center of the campus, the Cistern yard, has the most scenic and historic views. From Randolph Hall to the Spanish moss that hangs from the trees, it happens to be the most visited place.
2. Location
3. Size and Population
Charleston is approximately 156 square miles. Although, downtown Charleston is a small portion of that its size is relatively large. The population is 134, 385 as of the 2016 census. The city of Charleston extends into North Charleston and some smaller islands adjacent to the peninsula.
4. Downtown
Downtown Charleston is the center of everything that Charleston has to offer. The college is surrounded throughout downtown. From historic buildings to brick pathways, downtown is superior to any other part of Charleston. Much of the places are located on King Street such as restaurants and shopping.
5. Food
Charleston has a diversity of food options. The dining halls at the College of Charleston have a variety of assortments to choose from. There's a daily selection of new foods. The city also offers great food, that's located near campus. The most popular areas are located on King Street.
6. Residence Halls
The residence halls at the College of Charleston are relatively large considering many other schools in South Carolina. They are located on campus and usually take a five to ten-minute walk to class. The resident assistants are personally connected to each student and like to get to know you on a personal level, especially incoming freshmen.
7. College's Facilities
The facilities at the college are high-tech and state-of-the-art. The School of Science and Mathematics have some of the best laboratories in the area; and also, the Medical University of South Carolina is close enough that some students participate in research at the graduate school.
8. People
The people in Charleston are friendly and charismatic. The city brightens the mood of the people that travel through.
9. Diversity
The college has people from all over the states and world. Th tourists that travel here are also from all parts of the world. Also, the diversity of the people allow students to better connect with cultures from different places.
10. Academics
At the College of Charleston, students take their academic excellence as high regards. Many students are enrolled as full-time so the workload can be quite vigorous but the more challenging the better.
As a freshman, I have explored many places and have gotten to know the city a lot better, but I have yet to travel everywhere. Charleston offers so many activities that it takes time to complete. Charleston is hands down one of the best cities in America, and I am happy to be at a school that allows me to experience all of what Charleston has to offer.
