College Life Can Be Stressful, But It's All About How You Manage It

College can be a stressful time in a person life no matter their age, a young adult coming right out of high school and going into living on their own if they choose to live on campus, and school is going to be completely different then what they are used to.

Then you have the pressure to socialize with new people maybe even joying a sorority or fraternity. There was a poll taken in 2016 conducted by the American College Health Association, they found 34.4% of college students reported that stress had a negative impacted on their academic performance.

And it doesn't matter on the age of the student you can be a 19-year-old student in your first year or an older in their 30's trying to finish their degree. The stress is different for everyone but it's always a factor. according to the American college health Association, stress was the single most common inhibitor on student academic performance, and this was then followed by depression, anxiety, and sleep difficulties.

Students can put a lot on themselves whether that be taking to many classes in a semester, or staying up all night they will stay up late cramming for the next day's exam and not get enough sleep to focus.

Finances are also very stressful, many students work and pay for their college or maybe their family has saved for them. But then you have the student who is on a scholarship who have the stress of keeping their grades and GPA up to make sure they don't lose it.

Or you have the single parent going back to school to make a better life for their kids, and/or a single income family that relies on financial aid because they don't make enough to pay for the classes and pay their bills.

Socializing can also be stressful, there are some people that have a harder time getting out and being social than others, and it can be hard to put yourself out there when you don't know anyone.

There are so many factors that can make college very stressful, but there are things that students can do as well. When it comes to your academics, make sure you have good time management this will help when you have papers due and keeping a planner whether it be on your phone since we all always have our phones or have a planner on our desk, this will help us know what is due and when.

Stop waiting till the last minute to get your assignments done, this is only going to hurt you. Get out and take a walk and be active. This will help with your focusing and getting out into fresh air always helps clear the mind. Eat a little better, now this can be hard at times especially during finals but eating healthier can help with energy.

Stay hydrated, get enough sleep and take a break, you can't cram everything into your head and think it's going to stay if you are so tired and burnt out. Ask for help or start a study group having people around you will help with stress and know your not alone there are plenty of us out there that are going through the same thing.

Life can be stressful but asking for help is not a sign of weakness its a sign of strength.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
