Last week, I watched The Hunting Ground, a documentary on Netflix about sexual assaults on college campuses across America. This documentary was incredibly informative, as well as powerful. As a freshman and a female at a large public university, I couldn't believe this was my first time watching this documentary. I believe it should be required for all college students to watch this and here's why:
The Hunting Ground was a touching documentary that interviewed dozens of sexual assault survivors. The bravery that these young women possessed and the courage they had to be featured in this film brought me to tears. Their stories were heartbreaking, and hearing them speak of the things that happened to them was horrible. This documentary makes you feel things. Deep sympathy was something I felt while watching, and also admiration for these survivors for being so brave.
The bravery of the survivors in the documentary will inspire others to speak out about sexual assaults that may have happened to them, and that's another reason why this documentary is so important. The majority of sexual assaults that occur on college campuses go unreported, largely because of the fear the victim has of not being believed or valued. This documentary shows everyone who watches it how important it is to speak up, and to not be afraid.
This documentary made me so angry during many different points. It's infuriating to hear about the stories of athletes and students who are not punished for sexually assaulting someone. The number of females who are assaulted each year made me mad, but the lack of support from so many schools made me even more mad.
After I watched this documentary, I told my mom about it, my friends from home about it, and all the girls on my hall about it. I truly think EVERYONE should watch it, but especially college students. I hope and pray that this doesn't happen to anyone I know, but, God forbid it does, this documentary has informed me on how to take action, as well as how to provide the comfort that a person suffering through that would need. This is the unfortunate world we live in that sexual assaults are so prevalent on college campuses, but documentaries like this will hopefully assist in putting an end to it.
