College Isn't For Me, Yet I Am Still Here So I Can Make A Great Life For Myself

I came here for a purpose, and won't quit until I reach my goal.

Everyone goes their ways after high school whether it's college, military, or going into the workforce. Sometimes people even change their paths. There are a number of people I know who went to college for a short period of time and ended up leaving because they said, "college isn't for me." It's kind of hard to admit, but over the past few semesters I've grown to think that college isn't for me, but I'm still here. And I intend to stay here.

Don't get me wrong, college has definitely brought me some amazing blessings. From finding my best friend, Stephanie, and my boyfriend. I've had the opportunity to expand my skills, and learn a lot. But at the end of the day, I don't like college.

This might sound contradicting since I wrote an article about not being here "just to pass." And although I'm not here to "just pass" it doesn't mean I have to like college. I do enjoy education and am constantly striving to learn, but the way the school system works is not always enjoyable. For example, students always say how they feel their GPA defines them. The school system standardizes learning which not all students can adapt to. We're all unique and cannot perform to the best of our ability when we are told to conform to one way. This is why students like me, who love to learn all new things, can feel suffocated by the school system sometimes.

I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to attend college, and I have learned a great deal. I take my education seriously, but the stresses that come about can be very difficult. It really makes me wish I could just travel the world and learn that way, rather than trying to learn information in a short time to just take an exam on it. I want to learn in the real world through application or trial and error.

Not only does my school-related stress make college less than enjoyable, but it's very unexpected. I understand the real world is unexpected, but between moving from school to home makes me feel lost personally. I am one who likes to be settled down and not constantly running. With school work being unexpected sometimes too, I don't like to overload myself with extra involvement. I've met some awesome people in college, but by not being so involved I haven't made as many friends as I could have. I'm not one who likes to go out to party and get drunk. I'm somewhat of an introvert, and college is a great place for extroverts.

Everyone I have talked to that said college wasn't for them, dropped out of school. I have absolute no intentions of dropping out. I came here to learn about a career, learn about myself, and to get a degree so I can make a career for myself in which both makes me happy and allows me to support myself in the future. Just because I don't like college doesn't mean I am going to up and quit.

Every day I still try to make the best out of my college experience, and try to learn as much as possible. I take the time to enjoy the things I learn. By the time I walk across across the stage to get my degrees in a little over a year from now, I will be extremely happy I put myself through college so I can make a great life for myself. Sometimes we have to do things that may not be enjoyable just so we can be beyond happy in the future.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
