I remember all throughout elementary school I wanted to go to Harvard and I wanted to be a lawyer- I figured an Ivy League education was the only option for me if I wanted to grow up and make millions. Even as a third grader I was already tricked into the common belief that the best universities equal the best life, and such success was only accessible by a college diploma. Many people still believe this, which isn't fair.
As students reach their senior year of high school, many are judged for not going on numerous college tours or receiving multiple acceptance letters. If you don't go to college right after high school, you'll probably get looked down upon by a lot of people. You'll receive those condescending "oooh, how... interesting" remarks after answering the typical "what are your plans?" question. But why? Who decided that those who choose to hop right into working are to be less successful than those who choose to go to college?
Trust me, I'm very glad and thankful that I get the opportunity to go to a university. It's a choice that I made and I'm happy with it. I know that it's up to me to find success using my college degree and I'm certain I'll do well. Although the route that I'm taking seems to be the typical path, it's not for everyone- and that's perfectly fine! People who decide not to pursue a college education are able to find plenty of job opportunities, in which they'll also be able to find success. There are jobs that are based online, such as web development and support, jobs in administrative positions, jobs in the mechanic and electric field, and much more.
We are in a society where a college degree isn't required to have a successful degree, but unfortunately, we are also in a society where a university education seems to be the only approvable option following high school. We all need to be more supportive and open to those who choose not to attend college. Remember: going to college or right into the workforce are both valid choices, and neither option guarantees more success than the other. People should never be looked down on for the path they take to launch their careers- nobody has to go to college, so always be open-minded and accepting.
