The word "home" has an infinite amount of meanings for different people. Some think home is somewhere memories took place with loved ones. Others think home involves the people they are close to. Meanwhile, there are those who cherish their home away from home. College students like myself relate to this when they have as much school spirit as I do as a Longwood Lancer.
Being homesick for college is more common than people think.
I have always been the kind of person who loves to explore new places. Even as a kid, I have been told that I was rather excited to start preschool. I love seeing new environments, whether it's a trip to a place I've never been before like Universal Studios or a normal vacation spot for my family like Nags Head, North Carolina.
I have made my love for Longwood University as clear as a clean window more times than I count. My college friends have already told me multiple times that they missed everybody at school and cannot wait to get back. Although I cherish summer as much as my writing, I sometimes find it strange to be out of my school routine.
This past year, I somehow acclimated to late night essay writing and adventurous weekends with my college friends. It feels strange not having assignments to turn in by 11:59 PM, but I know that there is more to college life than the workload.
College is learning to live with people. You really don't know a person until you live with them which makes my friendships with my roommate and other friends so special. We understand each other's habits, both good and bad, and we unite ourselves with our school spirit.
Longwood University is not just a college where people can get degrees. Students like myself have a genuine admiration for what we call our "home away from home," and I know my next few college years will prove that more and more.
