A few things I have learned after being in college for 2 weeks.
1. Teachers won't tell you what assignment you have to do for next class
In high school, I was so used to teachers writing the homework on the board just about daily. After being in college for two weeks, I have realized that professors don't work the same way. All my professors gave out a syllabus the first class and all the assignments are on there. Be prepared to do a lot of looking back on the syllabus, and make sure you print it out if it is online.
2. Don't buy textbooks at the school store- rent them online!
I saved at least $100.00 renting my textbooks online instead of buying them at my school's bookstore. Although I did have to trek to the bookstore a couple times for specific titles, the majority of my books were easy to find online, at even cheaper prices. Just make sure they are the right editions. Along with saving money, I saved myself a lot of time from having to stand in the long lines at checkout.
3. If someone is walking with headphones in, don't talk to them
I am definitely guilty of this one. I walk around campus with headphones in all the time, and it's mainly because I am trying to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible without being interrupted. As much as I love talking to people and making new friends, it's hard to get where I need to be if I keep stopping to have conversations. Did I mention they're the same conversations over and over again?
"Hi, how are you?"
"Oh, I'm good"
"Good! The weather sucks, right?"
Along with saving time, sometimes I just have a bad day and don't feel like talking to anyone.
4. Sound travels in residence halls, and people WILL hear you if you talk loudly
I know that at least where I live, sound travels a LOT down the residence halls. I have heard countless conversations about "whether he likes me or not", not to mention the many FaceTimes with friends and family. People think that leaving their rooms to FaceTime is better, but know that everyone behind the doors around you will be able to hear your conversations.
5. You will get a significantly less amount of sleep each night
This may not hold true for everyone, but I switched from getting about 8 hours of sleep a night to getting at most 6 each night. For whatever reason, I haven't had a mental breakdown yet. Maybe I've just been too busy. Make sure you set aside time for yourself to take quick naps, but don't take advantage of the long breaks you have during the day. Those should be used mostly for homework and studying.
