10 Things My College Friends Have Taught Me

Your first year of college is a good one - I've learned a lot from these people along the way.

I learned a lot in my first year of college. Living on campus, I when I wasn't focusing on school or work, I was constantly with my friends. We formed a tight group very quickly and very easily; we learned that we can spend hours on end with each other and not even realize it. It was so easy to go down the hall and then hang out for hours on end, hanging out from 12 p.m. to four in the morning. I had a great first year and I owe that all to my friends. Here are 10 things I have learned along the way.

1. You get what you pay for - pirated movies may be in a different language

Abigail Lindenmeier

Don't be surprised if the last ten minutes of a downloaded movie are in a completely different language. We found this out the hard way when we went to watch "She's the Man" and couldn't figure out the ending because it was in Dutch. If you don't know the source of the movie or if it came from a cousin's friend, then chances are it may not be completely what you wanted.

2. If you go to a baseball game while sick, chances are you will not get better right away

Abigail Lindenmeier

When going to a baseball game in freezing cold weather while you have a bad cold, chances are you will not feel better anytime soon. It's totally worth it though because you spent an amazing evening with your friends and saw some pretty cool players as well.

3. If you find glass in your food, you should probably tell the manager

Abigail Lindenmeier

After the waitress shatters glass all over your food, you should probably alert the manager. At the end of the semester, we decided to go out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate our victories. As the waitress was bringing over a pitcher of water, she chipped it and shards fell onto one of our plates. We didn't speak up, but after the night was over, we all agreed that we probably should have.

4. If you go out on a late night adventure, you probably won't want to go to class the next morning

Abigail Lindenmeier

In hindsight, we probably shouldn't have gone on a late night adventure on a Monday night, but it was totally worth it. Spending time together on stressful days was what got me through the semester, and even though it was hard to get up at 8 a.m. the next morning, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

5. If you take too long to get ready for a surprise concert, you may not be in line in time for tickets

Abigail Lindenmeier

Sadly, we did not go. Instead we paid for a very expensive Uber, skipped a class (or two), and ended up not getting in. We figured out the hard way that if you're not super early for surprise tickets, then you probably won't be able to make it through the doors. I probably shouldn't have taken an extra 30 minutes to get ready for it, but we still wouldn't have been there in time anyway. So for next time, if the poster says they're not selling the tickets until 3 p.m., and you shouldn't line up until 3 p.m., then you should probably line up at 6 a.m.

6. You may suck a little less at ice skating after falling multiple times

Abigail Lindenmeier

You will still no doubt fall, but you may just fall a little less.

7. Pizza tastes better when the toppings are stolen from the dining hall

Abigail Lindenmeier

This one is a no brainer. Free food is the best food, especially when you don't have to worry about paying for it.

8. Ice cream in 35 degree weather isn't a bad thing

Abigail Lindenmeier

There is no correct time for ice cream. When the dining hall is serving chocolate chip cookie dough and you're running late for something else, grab the cone and take it outside with you. No one is going to judge a girl walking around with a hat and winter coat on while carrying an ice cream cone.

9. Knowing the tune to a song is not the same as knowing the words to a song

Giphy

After many nights of being made fun of for not knowing the words to some very famous songs, I have made it my mission to figure out more lyrics... somewhat. Chances are, if you swear that you know the lyrics to Eminem's "Lose Yourself", you probably don't.

10. If you click on a GIF on Tinder, it automatically sends

Giphy

This one we really figured out the hard way. When all hanging out, a friend decided to install the very popular dating app. Very late that night, we made the mistake of clicking a very unfortunate GIF and sending it to a promising match. "I thought it would make it bigger!" were the famous last words.

Thanks to these friends for helping me come up with this article idea, couldn't have done it without ya.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
