For When You Feel Like Dropping Out
Jessie Schlaudecker

It’s halfway through the semester, and it’s started already. You start missing more and more of your eight A.M. classes, and all of your essays don’t get finished (or started) until thirty minutes before the deadline. You start to wonder, “I’m an art major. Why am I taking biology?” The prospect of changing your major to something that doesn’t require a lot of effort becomes more and more appealing.

If any of these statements describe you, you may be having thoughts of dropping out. But don’t let these things get in the way of success! Here are ten reasons why you SHOULDN’T drop out.

1. All the money you paid for your textbooks

Remember back to the first week of classes when every teacher was giving out the syllabus. You made a list of all the books you needed and realized just how much money you were going to have to spend. Even after you signed up for Amazon Prime and you got free shipping, your bank account was depleted. Don’t waste that money! Selling your books won’t get all of your money back. You’ll be broke and a dropout.

2. The roommate you don’t like will get the room to himself/herself

If you drop out and the school doesn’t reassign your room, that pesky roommate is going to get the whole place to himself/herself. Don’t give them that satisfaction. Stay enrolled and you can annoy your roommate for the other half of the semester. Or be like me and just hope they drop out first.

3. You’ll have to go back home until you (maybe) find a job

You thought it was bad being bossed around by your parents for eighteen years? Well, get ready to do the laundry and wash the dishes for a few more years. I’m sure your parents would love to have you back home, but it won’t be fun when you’re forty and still sleeping in your childhood bedroom.

4. Honestly, what skills do you have?

I’d like to think I could find a job without a degree, but I (sadly) see the downfalls of this plan. If you drop out, how are you going to get a job to support your future? Yes, some jobs don’t require a degree, but do you want to hope for the best? Why plan on luck intervening when you can plan ahead? Your future boss does not want to hear that your only skill is being able to sneak out without waking up your parents.

5. Because you are going to rock that graduation cap and gown

Ladies pick out some cute shoes, and boys make sure your socks match because you need to make that awful outfit look good. Depending on how far along in school you are, graduation could be coming up soon! If not for anything else, keep pushing because we need someone to add a little style and flare to graduation day.

6. Free t-shirts

So I know (technically) your tuition pays for all of the “free” things you’re getting, but it’s nice not having to pay directly out of pocket for them. Your tuition is full of fees for all of the clubs and activities on campus, so you might as well take advantage and grab a few things that won’t put a dent in your account.

7. This is the last chance to explore your interests.

College is the last opportunity for you to go out into the world and try new things before you have to get a grown-up job. Maybe you’ll take the chance to study abroad in Italy, or (if you’re like me) you’ll work in Disney World for a semester. You also have smaller opportunities, like taking elective classes that will show you what you are really interested in for the future.

8. You already paid for it

Depending on your school’s policy, it’s unlikely you can get back all the money you paid for tuition and classes. Working that minimum wage job at your local Olive Garden isn’t going to replenish your funds fast enough. Stick it out and take advantage of what you’re paying for.

9. Your freedom will be gone

After college, all of your life is set by your job and your family. Use these four years as a chance to have the best time possible without someone breathing down your neck.

10. How will you find a rich spouse?

So maybe your ambitions aren’t that high, so your plan is to marry someone with money. But if your only relationship pool is at your job that doesn’t pay a lot, how will you find someone with way more cash than you? Go to classes at least until you can catch you a significant other to support your online shopping addiction.

College truly may not be the place for you, but don’t drop out just because you hit a rough patch. Keep studying and working towards your degree. One day, it will all pay off!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
