College Crunch Time: To Bring Or Not To Bring

The struggle of deciding what to bring, and what to leave at home.

T-two weeks fellow Villanovans! If you're anything like me, your bedroom floor has a coating of haphazardly folded clothing, photo frames, every pair of shoes you've worn since Middle School, and underneath all those piles probably lies your organization skills. So, after perusing many lists of "things to bring," I've walked away with one conclusion: I need to know what not to bring.

Bring: Storage Containers

Probably the most unanimous feature of every college packing list I've seen is to bring storage containers. I recently saw what my dorm looks like in images on Nova's website, and let me just say, I'll be surprised if my roommate and I can't hold hands while in our respective beds. For that reason, the extra storage containers are imperative to fitting all your belongings. Imagine any dorm rooms looked like this.

*Maximize storage space by placing your containers under your bed with bed risers!

Don't Bring: A Sewing Kit

You don't even know how to sew.

Bring: First Aid Kit

Maybe I'm just prone to injury, but I am always nicking myself with my razor, or scraping my legs, and definitely always popping Advil when my head hurts. Even more than that, it's not so atypical for me to burn my neck with my flat iron, or even catch a bad cold. For that reason, I know my first aid kit is going to be one of my best purchases. Contained inside my kit are a variety of bandages (for those random and painful between finger cuts), burn cream, antiseptic cream, safety pins, ibuprofen, and some sterile gloves if I ever have to put my first aid certification to test.

Don't Bring: Too Many Unhealthy Snacks

From what I've seen and heard about my school in particular, there are MANY dining options, and MANY are not very nutritious (Zilly Fries). For that reason, you may as well try to keep more healthy snacks in your room like granola, and peanut butter, and Skinny Pop, and leave the mac and cheese and pizza rolls to your neighbors. I do concede that Ramen Cup Noodles is definitely a must have.

Bring: Basic Clothing

We already covered that there is a lack of personal space in these dorms, so in order to pack efficiently, cover all your basic tees, tanks, long sleeves, jeans, and leggings first. This is all you probably wear, anyways.

Don't Bring: Books

Like don't go and buy James Pattersons' entire Women's Murder Club Series (my current penchant) thinking that you'll have so much time available to read fifteen books. If you were the kind of person that was too busy in High School to read books from September to July, then what makes you think you'll suddenly find that time in college? Also, for the purpose of avoiding more clutter, get the e-Book version!

Bring: New Backpack

This might just be a tradition in my family, but it's a good one, so I'll share. Start the school year with a fresh, new backpack. Even if you're buying the same black Jansport that you've bought for the past five years, it doesn't matter. There's something about a new backpack that represents a clean slate, another try, another year. And don't just hoard all the old backpacks, donate them to charities like St. Judes or the Ronald McDonald House.

Don't Bring: A Tiny Wastebasket

This also might just be one of those "only me" things, but I always tend to accumulate a lot of trash over the course of just a week. Whether I'm tossing water bottles or plastic slips from online orders, or papers, or old makeup, my tiny garbage can always seems to be full. To combat this issue in college, I bought a larger, but narrow, garbage can with a lid. Seriously though, what do those garbage cans even fit?

So, these are just a few decisions I've had to make the past few weeks, and are totally my own personal suggestions. Thus, to anyone reading this article with some college packing credibility, comment and let me know what I'm missing!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
