To The College Christian Who Thinks God Isn't Listening

If God brought you to it, He can certainly bring you through it.

Can you hear me, God?

Dear College Student,

It's the fall term of a brand new year. You are either way over your head or you just flat out don't care anymore because you feel as if you have hit rock bottom. You hide your worries so well that even your friends think you're doing fine. Yet in the quiet of your room, you being to wonder if even God hears your cries and struggles.

You are that education major who cannot seem to get it right.

Or maybe you're the business major who does not get enough recognition and credit for always getting it right.

Or maybe you're somewhere in between.

You constantly pray that this will be the day. That this will be the exam you get an A on. That this will be the day your professor realizes that you work hard in class. That today will be the day all of your worries and prayers will be answered. That there is no more stress.

But it's not.

The day for which you have been praying for has yet to come. You wake up every single day prepared for the blessings God is going to give you but yet it comes up short.

Every. Single. Day.

Yet you are so blind to see what God is actually doing. You want to get that A so badly that you do not thank him for a B. You crave recognition so badly that you are blind to see that He is allowing you to be great at what you do. You turn your head to see the things you expect him to do only not to recognize what he does NOT do in your life. He does so much for you than you know.

He has opened so many doors for you in the first place. He placed the fire in your heart to keep going. He is the one who sent you the acceptance letter, not the university. He is the one who told you where to go and what to major in. He is the one breathing life into you even on the days where you think you can not even take another step.

You may want that A and you may want credit for all your hard work, but there is something wrong with doubting God. He is always there. Even on the nights where you are down on your knees crying to him, only to find out it was another disappointment. He heard you. He knows your struggles.

While I do not have the answer to why God doesn't answer our prayers, I do have this: He is preparing you for something good. Something better than you could ever imagine. Maybe you are going to cross paths with someone who is going through the same thing and you both can help each other. Or maybe you are setting an example to others that even when He is "not good," He is still good.

So when you find yourself on your knees, crying out to Him again, in your dorm room, remember that He does hear you. Try to thank him next time, rather than blame Him.

Proverbs 5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths."

Sincerely,

Your fellow struggling college student

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
