Coldplay. Over the past 20 years, Coldplay has graced us with countless songs filled with every kind of emotion. From the tear-jerking song “Fix You," to the light-hearted and dance-filled “Sky Full of Stars," Coldplay has truly inspired a generation.
The band itself started in a college dorm in Wales in 1999 and struck worldwide fame in 2000 with their song “Yellow." Ever since then, they have had no trouble releasing countless hit after hit. Following their breakthrough into the international music scene, they released their album “A Rush of Blood to the Head” which featured one of their most famous songs “Clocks."
After the release of this album, Coldplay went on their first world tour, which was a smashing success. Following that tour, the band got back to work, recording the album “X & Y." This album, once again a smashing success, featured Coldplay’s most popular song to date, “Fix You." This album enabled Coldplay to skyrocket up the international music ranks, and sold 8.3 million copies in 2005, making it the most bought album of the year.
Following that, Coldplay took a small break, and released “Viva la Vida or death and all of his friends” which had, you guessed it, “Viva La Vida." Their success has continued into the 2010s with their albums “Mylo Xyloto," “Ghost Stories," and most recently, “A Head Full of Dreams." Each one of these works has produced number one hits and have continued to grow the band's brand.
Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m writing on something just like this (see what I did there?) and why any of this matters.
Honestly, it probably doesn’t matter to most people, but Coldplay has had an impact on millions of people, and sadly, their time is coming to a close.
Before the band’s latest tour, their frontman, Chris Martin, announced that this could be the band's last tour and that they don’t plan on releasing any new music soon. Because of this, many people immediately bought tickets to see them before they “retire," so to speak.
Myself, being the obsessed Coldplay individual that I am, decided to also buy tickets to see them in my home city of Minneapolis, and I don’t think I’ve had such a fun night in my entire life.
That night was filled with tears, laughs, and lots of dancing as the band shared their experiences with us, and gave us all a night to cherish for years and years to come.
As their time comes to an end, we should admire Coldplay much like we would a professional athlete coming to the end of his career, and look back on what makes them great.
In my eyes, what makes Coldplay great was that they never failed to surprise people with their music. It seemed as though with every album, and every song, Coldplay took us on a new adventure, constantly giving us new things to appreciate.
Though they started as a bunch of college kids from Wales, they will now be remembered as one of the all-time greats for many.
