Last week I had the pleasure of going to see Avengers: Infinity War. The friends I went with had invested years of their lives to this franchise. For me, this was only the third Marvel movie I had seen. I was going in blind and expected to be thoroughly confused.
Prior to the screening, I read a cheat sheet of sorts explaining who the different characters were. While this in no way prepared me to understand years of movie history, it helped me enough so I would not pester my friends with questions every two seconds.
If you have not seen the movie yet, what are you doing with your life? Also, you might want to stop reading now.
At first, I was a little confused. I had not seen Thor: Ragnarok so the beginning of the movie did not make a ton of sense but I just sort of went with it. I was immediately invested in Loki, Thor's brother, so when the killed him right off the bat I was extremely disappointed. However, it speaks a lot about a movie if someone like me who knows nothing about the franchise can become captivated immediately.
For the next 30 minutes or so I found myself just having a great time. I loved the action, the humor and the fact that I did not understand 70% of what was going on did not bother me at all. Then they brought out Spiderman. The new Spiderman is one of the few Marvel movies that I have seen. While I did not love the movie in general, I LOVE Tom Holland. I think he is charming, adorable and so relatable. When he appeared on screen I immediately broke out into a huge smile. Throughout the movie any moment he was on the screen was a good moment.
Another standout moment for me was the interactions between Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy. While it was later explained to me that Thor's humor was a recent development, the exchanges between all of them seemed so organic. Chris Hemsworth could put on a potato sack and not move for an hour and I would call it perfection but I was really impressed by his acting (and body) throughout the entire film. When Chris Pratt's character introduced himself as Star-Lord, I thought it was a joke and started laughing. My friend then informed me that was his actual name and my stupidity made her laugh.
I have been wanting to watch Black Panther for forever and just never have. This movie has made that want a need. Wakanda is absolutely stunning, the characters are fantastic and their technology is insanely impressive. The entire fight scene is dramatic, suspenseful and incredible. Seeing (almost) all of the characters come together to face this crazy alien enemy was so cool even for someone who was not invested in their lives.
By the time the movie was ending I had become invested in the franchise. I made the commitment to catch up and watch all of the other movies this summer. And then they killed (almost) everyone. My friends were crying and I was sitting there, my jaw open in complete disbelief. I had just made the decision to commit significant time to this franchise and now there was no point. What really broke my heart was Spiderman's death. He knew it was coming and begged not to go. I started bawling almost immediately.
Ultimately, I loved the movie. I was entertained and left emotionally drained. While I am upset with the way things ended, this movie excited me enough to watch the rest of the franchise.
