To The One Who Has Closed Off Their Heart

A genuine letter to my friend who has built walls around his heart.

Anna Jones

Dear Friend,

I am writing this letter because I am concerned about the condition of your heart. I have known you for a little bit of time now and feel that I have gotten a good sense of your character and desires. In seeing that and personally experiencing life with you, I am concerned.

On the surface level you are a great guy, you have lots of friends, and you’re likeable. You enjoy life and try to live it to the fullest, which is great. I appreciate and admire your curiosity and adventure in life. But on a deeper level, I worry.

As people we desire love. Everyone wants to feel loved by those close to them. It is amazing to see and experience a deeper connection with people through giving and receiving love. That is such a beautiful thing. What an amazing feeling and connection God has given us as people!

However, the more I get to know you, the more I see your repulsion to love. You love your family, especially your sweet, sweet mother. But when it comes to friends and relationships you keep your distance. You let people in, to a certain point, then it seems as if warning signals start going off in your head. You have built a wall around your heart, and not in a good way.

I understand that you have been hurt in the past. I understand why you have scars and want to prevent reopening wounds and feelings. Maybe part of that is because you are a guy and naturally hide feelings (am I right ladies?) or maybe it’s just how you have trained yourself. Either way, it’s not healthy and its frustrating for those who want to love and care for you.

Please for you own sake, stretch your boundaries. Allow others to care for you and in return be intentional with them. Know what you want out of friendships and relationships and learn how to love people well. I promise it will amaze you what joy you will find if you open up your heart and be a little vulnerable with people. There is so much more value in people than in material things. Ultimately, understand everyone makes mistakes and allow grace for that.

Sincerely,

Your Caring Friend

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
