As I grow older, I've learned more and more about the planet that we live on. How it's currently being treated very poorly and how climate change is real. I've taken classes on it at a college level, seen evidence first hand and have watched a number of documentaries on the issue as well. The facts are overwhelming. According to Global Climate Change, "Scientific evidence of the warming of the climate is unequivocal."
This means that it's without a doubt, a real issue.
In Germany, you are fined if you don't recycle but in America, you have to pay. Why do we live in a society where doing the right thing comes with a cost? Why is saving our planet not important to the average American even though there is factual evidence of climate change? These questions have been bothering me as of late and I've felt the need to address them.
In my opinion, denying climate change is like denying the fact that Christmas is on December 25th or that Barrack Obama was our 44th U.S. president. Naturally, you can't deny a fact. Scientists all over the world have done research and have collected data on this issue but suddenly we see scientists as unreasonable sources. The scientists that discovered how to take a man into space and back to earth are now not trustworthy or competent enough to find this information.
It's defiantly not helping that we have a president who also is a climate change denier. President Trump supports oil companies and feels that climate change is not a real issue. He even went as far as to essentially shut down the EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency. Recently, he greatly reduced the number of restrictions that were once in place to keep the environment safe. In the future, this could really do a lot of damage.
To go back to an earlier point, there isn't exactly a huge incentive to help the environment, either. Having to pay to recycle most plastics and cardboards, paying more to use resources that help conserve energy and even higher prices for the new smart cars as well. Protecting the environment in America is viewed as an unnecessary expense. When we can just use all of the energy and gas we want, we don't bother even thinking about the planet.
The last thing that makes me really uneasy is the fact that people don't care about the climate after they are gone. I've heard phrases like "That's a problem for the future generations." or "I don't plan on having kids so why would I care?"
You should care because it's your planet, too.
Just because you may not be around when terrible effects start happening as a result of global warming doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try and do one thing so that our world can keep being great for the future. Maybe you know someone now who will be affected by it. All it takes is a small action from us all. You'd be surprised how easy it is.
I hope that someday we can make a change and make a difference in the lives of future generations, even if it's very small.
