The Cleveland Indians have done it.
They have set the America League record for the longest winning streak at 21 consecutive games. By the time this article has been published, they may have won more games or even lost one but this article will be a commemoration of that historic achievement.
Before this historic streak began, the Indians were at 69-56 in a tight Central Division race with the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals. It looked like it was going to be a dogfight to the finish, though sentiment was that the Tribe would end up prevailing in the end.
How did this winning streak begin? Where else, but Boston?
During a series against the Red Sox from August 21-24, the Indians split the four-game series, losing the middle two games by a combined score of 15-2. In the final game, they exploded, winning by a score of 13-6. They then swept the Royals, shutting them out in every game with a combined score of 20-0 in the three game series. Everything started rolling from there.
Looking at the statistics of this winning streak, one would be stupified at what they would see. The Indians have outscored their opponents by 106 runs, 144-38. They have hit 42 home runs during that span, trailed only five innings out of 189, and shut out their opponents six times. Talk about amazing and it doesn’t look like they will be stopping their dominance any time soon.
Prior to the Indians’ historic run, the 2002 Oakland Athletics, known as the “Moneyball A’s,” previously held the record at 20 games in a row. The two teams that they will be chasing are the 1935 Chicago Cubs, whom they are tied with at 21 wins in a row, and they 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 straight games but had a tie in there so it’s technically an unbeaten streak.
It is a great time to be a Cleveland fan right now, but I’m sure that the ultimate prize, a World Series trophy, will make things even sweeter come October. For now, enjoy the ride, Cleveland.
