What to Expect When Cleaning Out the Basement

There are some jobs no one wants to do. One of these is cleaning out the basement. The basement, typically, is a space no one wants to spend that much time in. As such, it can become a makeshift storage locker and begin to get filled with junk. It can also be a breeding ground for mold, pests, and other things you don’t want to deal with. With that in mind, below are some tips for cleaning out your basement.

Remove Valuables

In certain cases, there may be things in your basement you actually want to keep. This can include things like family heirlooms, antiques, vintage video games, expensive exercise equipment, and more. To make the process of clean-up easier on yourself, decide what you want to keep and relocate it to somewhere else in your home. If such items are precious to you, they shouldn’t be thrown down into the corner of a musty basement anyways.

Rent a Dumpster

Once you know what you should keep, you can get rid of the rest. Depending on what items you want to have removed and just what it is, you should consider dumpster rentals to help you efficiently dispose of all the junk and garbage accumulated in your basement. You can have your family help out in the physical disposal process if you don’t want to hire workers to do so. Overall, a dumpster will give you enough room to throw away nearly everything you have in your basement that should be thrown away. Relying on your normal trash disposal service may not be adequate since they won’t want to take that much stuff at one time, or won’t be able to haul certain things away. Especially larger furniture that might be broken or worn out.

Eliminate Pests and Mold

Two issues you may have in your basement are pests and mold growth. Once your basement has been emptied out, you can start dealing with these issues. Consider things like “spider bombs” to clear out all the arachnids and insects that may be lurking where you can’t see them. If you have larger pests down there, consider mouse traps and other pest removal tools. Next, work on removing mold. It can be a painstaking process, but it will be worth it. Use bleach mold cleaners to remove mold and use a dehumidifier to help ensure that your basement will not again be an environment where mold can grow.

Cleaning a basement can be a pretty hard job. To complete this job more efficiently, simplify the process. Move the things you want to keep, rent a dumpster to get rid of the things you don’t, and then take steps to remove pests and mold afterward. You’ll be amazed at how much space you’ll get back that you can now use for whatever you want.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
