It has been little over a week since I have begun my journey in college. When I am not working out, doing laundry, or getting to know the people in my dorm, a good ole binge is the best thing to get rid of the homesick blues. While newer movies and television shows are great and all, there is something to be said about the classics.
From the cheesy backdrops to some groundbreaking moments, here are five of the best classic movies and television shows.
"Fraiser" (1993 to 2003)
Considered one of the most successful spin-off series to ever be broadcast. The show follows the beloved Cheers character, Fraiser (Kelsey Grammer) on his move to the rainy city of Seattle to start his own radio show. The pretentious therapist must learn how to live with his salt of the earth retired police officer father, equally as a pretentious brother, British housekeeper, and his canine enemy Eddie. All 11 seasons of the Emmy award-winning hit are available on Netflix.
"10 Things I Hate About You" (1999)
If you are like me and love a perfect teen flick, the '90s heartthrob Heath Ledger (rest in peace *insert crying face emoji*) is definitely perfect. Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are perfect in the '90s version of the loosely mirrored William Shakespeare play "The Taming the Shrew." Cameron (Levitt) attempts to set up Kat (Stiles) with bad boy Patrick (Ledger) so he can take Kat's younger sister to the prom. "10 Things I Hate About You" is available to rent on Amazon Prime for $2.99.
"21 Jumpstreet" (1987-1991)
Before Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum blessed the big screen in two hilarious movies, Johnny Depp (pre-pirate) starred in the Fox show "21 Jumpstreet." The series followed four young undercover cops and one tough captain. With their youthful good looks, they are able to go undercover in high schools to take down some serious crimes. For those rainy nights, "21 Jumpstreet" is available for streaming on Hulu.
"Indiana Jone and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and the Last Crusade" (1981, 1984, 1989)
Indiana Jones has to be by far one of the best single heroin franchises and personally the best cure to action movie cravings. The original trilogy follows the adventurer/archaeologist beating the bad guys, getting into trouble, all while looking for archaeological relics. Young Harrison Ford (because young Harrison Ford is one of the best kinds of Harrison Ford) stars as Indiana Jones alongside Karen Allen, Sean Connery, Kate Capshaw, and John Rhys-Davies in the Spielberg and Lucas classics available on Amazon Prime.
"ER" (1994-2009)
Originally proposed as a film for the acclaimed director Steven Spielberg, the NBC show was a sure hit. Another successful show to come out of the '90s, it follows several stories of employees in the ER at County General Hospital in Chicago. The show stars '90s George Clooney as the dashing doctor Doug Ross and Anthony Edwards as the determined and hardworking as doctor Mark Green in the earlier episodes of this long-running television series. All "Greys Anatomy" fans should definitely put this one on their watchlist. All 15 episodes are available on Hulu.
Whether you need a break from partying or a break from your studies, or if you are feeling especially homesick, binging one of these classics is sure to do the trick.
