This past weekend I went to see the new Cinderella movie with my mom and sister. My sister and I have loved Disney movies ever since we were little girls and that definitely has not changed just because we are in college. So, naturally when we found out that they would be making a "live-action" version of one of our favorite childhood movies, we flipped out and couldn't wait to see it.
My mom, sister and I decided that we would make a day of it and go see the movie together. So several weeks pass and decided to go out of town to ski the first weekend of spring break and was super excited. Then I realized that I would be out of town the day that Cinderella was hitting the box office. *momentary freak-out* Immediately I call my mom and sister and explain the situation. Luckily they were super sweet and decided to wait on me to come back into town before they went to see it. Thank goodness.
After a great weekend with great people and what seemed like a never ending drive back into town, I made it home on St. Paddy's day and was super excited to see my mom and sister and of course couldn't wait to go to movies to see our much anticipated favorite fairytale. Until I give my mom a call right as I come into town and realize that she has come down with strep throat.... Great timing mom! Just kidding. I totally nursed her back to health and was more than willing to wait for my mom to get better since she was more than willing to wait on me until I got back into town.
So, I wait for three days for her to finally get to feeling back to herself and finally realized TODAY WAS THE DAY. I was finally getting to see Cinderella. *eeep!* We all decided to make a girls night out of it filled with pedicures, pizza from the heavens above (aka Capital Pizza), and of course the big finale CINDERELLA. Y'all. I was so freakin' stoked. I had been waiting for this moment forEVER.
We get in our seats and the cute little vintage Mickey cartoon whistles in the Disney introduction. Here. We. Go.
Of course, as is any fairytale, you've got to know that it might be a little cheesy. This came at the very beginning as we took a glimpse into Ella's sweet childhood at her family's country home. But once we got past the cheesy but sweet beginning, we then get into, of course, the sad and darker parts of the movie, which you expected from any "live-action" adaptation of Disney anything. Which, you are kind of thankful for because if it was cheesy the whole time it would have totally disappointed.
But, even though you are thankful for the more intense content, you kind of hate that it comes with Ella being totally stomped on by her wicked evil step-mother and nauseatingly obnoxious step-sisters. I mean y'all, if you thought the evil step-mom and sisters were bad in Disney's cartoon, you will be so bothered by the way Ella is treated in this. It so sad, but bless her sweet little resilient sole, she stays rooted in the teachings of her mother and doesn't let them get her down. "Have courage. Be kind," Ella constantly reminds herself.
Everyone knows the story, however, they throw in an interesting twist where Ella meets the prince in the forest prior to meeting him at the ball. This is where they both fall in love with each other for the first time... *sigh* And Ella knows that she just has to see him again. Thank goodness, the prince feels the exact same way and decides to invite the whole kingdom just to be sure that Ella turns up at the ball.
SPOILER ALERT: Evil step-mom is totally not going to let her go. OOh. Big shocker there. BUT, have no fear because, of course, Fairy Godmother is here! She does her bippity boppity boo-thang and get Ella looking all kinds of flawless to go meet her man and true love.
Ella arrives fashionably late and makes a super grand entrance that makes every person in attendance stop everything they are doing just to get a look at her. And then the moment we have all been waiting for, the prince spots her and it's game over for every other hopeful there. He goes out of his way to meet her halfway and of course, they dance. *eeeeeep!!*
Y'all can we talk about how amazing this dress is?! She looks amazing and this dress (my favorite color), is like THE DREAM. It spins and twirls and catches all the right lighting. Not to mention makes her look like an absolutely vision so it makes all the sense in the world that the prince, and well everyone else for that matter cannot take their eyes off of her.
But even when you feel like the night is going your way you know something is about to go totally wrong, and that is obviously when they are totally connecting but they the stupid clock has to go and chime midnight. *Buuuuuut, they are finally getting to know each other!!*
Ella has to make a run for it in glass freakin' pumps. MOMENT OF REALITY: She would have had to be carried to the castle ER for a million stitches, but... whatever. ANYWAY, she halls it out of there so she and the rest of her magical posse don't turn back to what they were before Fairy Godmother got them looking all spiffy.
She leaves behind one beautiful glass slipper, the only clue her ridiculously gorgeous but totally confused prince gets. But boy is that enough for him, after having to argue with both his dad and the royal advisor, the prince agrees that he will only marry some fancy pants princess from some foreign land only after they exhaust every effort to find his true love. So. Sweet.
By this time, evil step-mother has already figured out that she was the mysteriously beautiful ball attendee and has locked her away in the attic so that she may scheme her way into getting her horrible daughters married.
But of course, there is always a happy ending and "Kit" being the gorgeous AND smart prince that he is decided to join the search party for Ella without the mean and sneaky royal advisor knowing.
At this point, they have put the glass slipper on just about every female in the kingdom and finally make it to Ella's home, but poor thing is looked in the freakin' attic. How the heck is the prince going to find her up there?! Oh, of course her sweet little singing voice carries out the attic window and the entire search party hears it forcing evil lady to let her go and TRY ON THE SLIPPER!! YES!!
The prince sees her for the first time since the ball and the way he looks at her. Oh my gosh y'all, like they for real have to be in love. She says all these sweet things about only being a commoner and promising that she will still give her all to the kingdom and asks the prince to take her as she is and he promises only if she will take him that way. AWWWWW.
Ella is escorted out of that horrible home that once housed all of her favorite memories but not before she turns around and tells her step-mother that she forgives her. Way to be the bigger person! You go girl!!
We then fast forward to their wedding day and see Ella all dressed up as a beautiful bride next to her beautiful prince and of course they all live HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
This movie didn't disappoint one bit and I highly recommend you make a girls night date of it and go check it out. If you need an extra person, I'm SO down to see it again.
Cinderella gets a very happy 5 glass stars (because glass slipper? get it?)
