This may be news to some but we still have twelve more days of celebrating left!
In the modern days, most start Christmas celebrations somewhere around December 1, or even before Thanksgiving if you're extra festive. Somehow we have lost the traditions of earlier, Christmas celebrations though. Because on December 25, the celebrations abruptly end, the lights turn off, and the trees come down.
The traditional Christmas traditions are the exact opposite, because December 25, we are just getting started! Traditional Christmas celebrations begin on December 25 and continue inclusively until January 6.
There are lots of events that go along with the "Twelvetide" but I will not cover them all in this article. Beginning December 25 is the birth of Jesus, the son of God, born in Bethlehem, to a virgin. Beginning December 26 is the Feast Day of St. Stephen, the day traditionally set aside for giving food to the poor, usually leftovers. This tradition is captured in the song, "Good King Wenceslaus".
Beginning December 27 is The Feast Day of St. John the Apostle, the only of Jesus's disciples to not die a martyr. December 28 bring in the Feast Day of the Holy Innocents, a fest remembering all the children killed by King Herod.
December 29 is the day St. Thomas Becket was murdered in 1120. December 31st brings the day of Pope Sylvester I, a celebration just for his glorious actions.
January 1, brings a new year but it also brought forth the Day of Jesus's circumcision. Traditionally males were circumcised 8 days after birth.
In conclusion, we shouldn't end our celebrations on December 25 we should plug the tree in, and lets the house lights hang. pour yourself another glass of eggnog and listen to more Christmas music! Throw another log on the fire and enjoy Twelvetide.
Merry Christmas, And A Happy New Year!
