Looking for the right roommate can be a difficult decision, I chose a college that is in-state. My university is about 2 hours away from my hometown, so I can go home often, but still feel like I am away at college.
Being 2 hours away from my hometown, there are a lot of kids from my high school that chose the same university I did. I knew this and knew that it would be easy for me to find a roommate that I knew or semi-knew, but I really loved the idea of going off to college and meeting new people from different places.
So, I went with a random roommate.
At first, I wasn't that worried because I find myself very easy to get along with, but one of my aunts told me a story about how her random roommate was a nightmare. Her roommate would steal her clothes and her makeup and her BOYFRIEND. These stories made me worry that I was going to dislike my roommate.
After months of worrying that I was going to hate my roommate, I finally got her name and information. While texting her she seemed cool, but she lived out-of-state, so we couldn't meet in person. I officially met her on move-in day.
Now, with the school year almost gone, I completely love her! We hit it off right away and I am so blessed for that. We are very different in some ways and we don't spend all our time together. We know that sometimes we need time apart to do our own things, which is so important to a roommate relationship.
I would absolutely recommend doing random roommates because it immediately opens the door for you to meet someone new. I love my roommate and couldn't be have asked for a better person to be my first friend at college.
