It's October, yay! Which means in less than 31 days, it'll be Halloween -- you know, lots of candy, scary costumes and haunted house attractions.
This means costumes will be in full swing, and every year, it seems like most adults need reminding on their costume choices. Guys, you don't need to wear anything racist or offensive.
It's 2017, do we really need reminding?
Don't change your skin color to any color in the human race.
There's plenty of reasons not to do blackface,yellow-face or brown-face. If you need reminding, these "costumes" were used to portray people of color in a negative light, and it's quite insulting. Painting your face to look like a different person only reinforces racist perceptions.
You can paint your skin to a color shade found in a gumball.
Some people, many of whom are not racist, look forward to covering their bodies with paint. For these people, they find loopholes to do this whilst not appropriating a culture or being racist. Dress up as a brightly colored character! This can be characters from Avatar, a smurf or even Mistique from X-men.
Cultural traditions are not a costume.
Recycling people of color's cultures for your Halloween costume isn't being creative, it's called being an idiot. Other culture's traditions are not less sacred because you're not a member of that culture or because you have a different heritage.
The more everyone speaks about cultural appropriation, the less it will happen. Its 2017, we have more than enough diverse creative content to not culturally appropriate.
Call out your friends if they choose to use someone's culture, or mimic someone's skin tone this Halloween, make sure you're friends aren't showing up to parties in a headdress, or a sarape with a sombrero hat.
While thinking a different race/culture is cool, and wanting to dress and be similar to a different culture is one thing, it is offensive to mock certain races -- especially during Halloween -- so please educate yourself this season.
