There is one thing every one of us remembers about car rides with our families on a trip to Grandma's or a cross-country drive - the music on the radio. If you were lucky, your parents let you pick the soundtrack every now and then. These are the artists I liked to choose when my mom handed the proverbial radio remote over to me.
1. The Jonas Brothers
GiphyYes, you read correctly! The Jonas Brothers were my favorite band when I was a kid, so much so that I actually saw them in concert FOUR TIMES (the last time being their last tour ever)! They were the perfect boy band to fall in love and grow with, as they and their music grew and matured as well. If forced to choose, my favorite song would be "Inseparable" from their named album. The emotion in the music was, and is, real.
2. Hilary Duff
GiphyAnother excellent artist to grow up listening and jamming out in the car to! I'll be the first to admit that I knew her as an actress before a singer ("Lizzie McGuire," anyone?). But her killer voice and lyrics won me over, easy to relate to even as a small child that didn't always understand what it all meant. She was one of my only other concert experiences, the highlight of a rodeo I can barely remember outside of her.
3. Paramore
GiphyHaving older siblings was pretty great for me, the occasional teasing and catfights aside. One thing that they're amazing for is music! Sharing a room with my sister meant taking turns picking the music, and when her turn came, she always seemed to show me something new. There is a lot I could choose from, and in truth, at least half of my favorite bands today are because of her, but Paramore is the earliest I can remember my sister sitting me down and listening to with me.
4. Linkin Park
GiphyThis one, to my surprise and confusion now that I'm older, was introduced by my mom. "Hybrid Theory," their 2000 album, was always the first CD she put into the player when my brother and sister and I couldn't agree on what we should listen to next (and didn't want to listen to her old-people music). Something about the words rang true even back then, and even though the memories are mostly blurred now, those times are something I could never quite forget.
5. Plain White T's
Giphy"Every Second Counts" was the first album I ever downloaded to the mp3 player that I received when I was seven. Carrying around my CD player and all my CDs had finally become too much work, so Mom got me and my siblings mp3 players in place of the iPods that everyone else had. It did the trick; I had an electronic device smaller than my little-kid hand in place of the CD player, and I got to listen to all my favorite songs by all my favorite artists in no particular order. (This was also the end of enduring my mom and dad's old '70s music.)
6. Mayday Parade
GiphyAnd thus began my long-term love for alternative rock music, with their debut album "A Lesson In Romantics" back in 2007. At the time, the words meant almost nothing; it was the ability to dance my heart out in my bedroom that captured my love for them. Little did I know that this particular band would spark a deeper interest in music later on, once I hit middle school and the lyrics began to resonate in my heart. So many other songs and bands were born from this one for me, and I am ever thankful for this one - the one that made music more than just something to listen to.
