Coming home from college is hard for every student. At first you are excited. You finally have your own bathroom, a bed that's not made of mattress pads and your friends back. After a few weeks of the comfort and familiarity of your hometown you are longing to be back at your home away from home wherever that may be.
For me, that feeling hasn't hit yet. Which must be a good sign considering I've only been home long enough to unpack the necessities.
My first task is to find a summer job. Sometimes house sitting, babysitting and dog sitting are just not enough. Almost all college kids come home looking for some kind of work to do so that they either have spending money or money to go into a savings account. If I could have it my way, I would dedicate my time in the summer to as many jobs as possible to get experience.
My next task at hand is getting situated. Most college students will go through things that they either want to keep or want to sell. Be on the look out for students selling things for cheap because in most cases they just want some extra spending money.
Marvin J. Ashton once said that "Home should be an anchor, a port in a storm, a refuge, a happy place in which to dwell, a place where we are loved and where we can love." I believe that most people can relate to this. Whether you are surrounded by friends or family it is a place of love.
Most importantly, I want to make as memories as possible with friends from home this summer. Lucky for me I have the best friends who are up for anything whether it's exploring Atlanta, watching an outdoor movie, or going to a Braves game. My list of things to do for this summer goes on and on.
There are some people who might not picture their home a place of love but more somewhere that they belong. They might agree more with the wise words of Winnie the Pooh, " Home is the comfiest place to be." I was in Birmingham for a solid two semesters and I still don't know my way around. After living in Kennesaw, Georgia my whole life I could give you directions to any store, restaurant or movie theatre within a respectable distance.
Between having too much time on my hands one week and a busy scheduling the following week, living at home is very different than living on a college campus. I have healthier eating habits, wear more than just oversized t-shirts and gym shirts, my sleeping schedule is more regular because if not family will become worried, and being more aware of my cultural habits meaning I pay more attention to my surroundings, the music I'm playing and the phrases I'm using.
Overall, home is where love is, memories are created, friends are always welcome, and laughter never leaves.
