Why Every Chicagoan NEEDS To Visit Portland

Chicago what a wonderful city with such a rich history, culture, and tons of things to do. However, the city can get a little boring. For a change of scenery, I recently visited Portland, Oregon to visit and had a blast. The food, culture, and overall scenery is absolutely amazing. After my travels, I have compiled a list of things to do, and by "do" I mainly mean eat, in Portland.

1. Doughnuts. Doughnuts. Doughnuts.

Matt Groening, the creator of Simpsons, grew up in Portland. As a tribute to the show, Portland has millions of doughnut shops. The two most famous ones are VooDoo doughnuts (pictured) and Blue Star doughnuts. There are also many other local doughnut shops as well and let me tell you they are all worth trying.

2. The scenery is breathtaking

There are tons of things to see and do when it comes to nature in Portland. While in Illinois where everything is flat and there are only corn fields in our horizon, you will see vast forests and mountain ranges while in the city. You can even visit the Rondadundran Garden (pictured) where you can walk through beautiful paths and see an abundance of native plants to Oregon and also run into some lovely ducks of all sorts!

3. Twilight was filmed there

Okay, well parts of Twilight was filmed there among many other movies and tv shows. You can see the outside of Bellas house, cafeteria, beach scenes and many more parts of the film all just a short drive out of the city. So go ahead and recreate your Bella/Edward moment!

4. Ice Cream

Portland is all about making sure there are vegan, organic, gluten free, dairy free, etc... options and no matter what your food restriction may be, you will most definitely find a place that will accommodate to your needs. Eb & Bean offers dairy-free options for our lactose intolerant friends and Salt & Straw (pictured) will sometimes have a vegan option available.

5. There is no food you cannot find

As mentioned above Portland will have some restaurant(s) that will offer foods that coincide with your dietary needs. On top of this, there is no culture of food you will not find in Portland. Food ranges from the Corn Beef of Ireland, the wonderful Falafels of the Middle East, to the sticky rice of Thailand - there is nothing you cannot find.

All in all, Portland is cool place my dudes.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
