When it comes to harmful toxins, I have always thought that ignorance was bliss. What I mean is that if you don’t know what kind of chemicals are in your everyday hygiene or cleaning products, then you won’t be scared to use it. You can just go about your day and get the same discounted products that have been in your life for years.
I didn’t want to acknowledge how harmful these products could be because I didn’t want to go through the hassle of changing out all of my stuff for more expensive yet healthier products.
I know that there are a lot of people out there who have similar feelings and we need to wake up and smell the strangely potent fumes of the 409! As I was researching what exactly is wrong with the everyday products, like cleaning sprays and the different cosmetic products, I saw website after website naming off the list of chemicals and explaining why they’re harmful.
Then I got to the topic of deodorant and how the chemical in antiperspirant could lead to cancer, and it just turned into a rabbit hole of toxins. With all of this information, I now know that there has to be a better way of living. This better way of life might not mean that everything in my house that might contain harmful chemicals will get thrown away, but I can at least make baby steps.
One of those baby steps was dealing with an individual product. Deodorant. I’m not about to call out a particular brand of deodorants and say buy this instead of that. I will say that most deodorants have an Aluminum-based compound that may sound like is doing the job that deodorant is supposed to do, but it also is absorbed in the skin and has an estrogen-like hormonal effect.
Since estrogen can promote the growth of breast cancer, some scientists suggest that that compound might contribute to the growth of breast cancer. I would like to get more detailed in these shocking revelations, but more information is here.
So, to help fix this problem and worry that my deodorant was not only giving me a 24-hour scent of lavender but was also hurting me, I switched my deodorants. It was surprisingly hard to find one without antiperspirant, (had to look in the men's section). But I feel a lot better now that I know I am using a better product.
It does not take a lot to change individual products that you know could be bad for you.and. It might just take baby steps, and sometimes that’s all it takes to make yourself feel better about the products you're purchasing.
