I was on my high school's cheer team for 3 years. There were moments I loved and others not so much. I was able to do all stunt positions, I lived for the dances and performances, I made so many friends, etc.
However, going into my senior year I was traveling too much and involved in so many other things, the amount of effort I would've been putting in, wouldn't have been fair to the rest of the team so I didn't cheer my senior year. The 3 years I was a YellowJacket cheerleader, I wouldn't trade them for the world.
Working out pays off
We practiced all year. We only had 2 months off out of the year. As much as everyone complained, the workouts were honestly worth it. We ran, did full-body exercises, and stretched on the daily.
Honestly, I liked the workouts. They really help me get my mind off things and I knew in the back of my mind it'd pay off.
When you achieve something, no matter if it’s independently or as a team, it’s the best feeling in the world
I can't tell you how many people I've stunted with and how many stunts I've hit within the last 3 years but it's a lot. When you finally hit a stunt or finally get a dance right, it's the best feeling in the world.
You feel like you could conquer the world. It makes you want to try new things more and more just so you can say, "I did it."
You can ALWAYS improve
This was said by my coaches time and time again. At practice, we would practice our jumps anywhere from 30 minutes - an hour.
People would think, "Oh I look fine. I don't need to try anymore. Other people need to fix themselves." 90% of the time, they'd be the ones who needed to improve their jumps. You could always better yourself even when you don't think you could.
Practice like you perform
I loved dancing and performing in front of an audience. It was my favorite thing to do. Coaches would say this because girls wouldn't smile, wouldn't hit their motions, wouldn't try in general.
When we practiced, I tried my best to envision an audience right in front of me. I smiled, I was really loud, I hit every motion, and I tried my hardest with every stunt. When you do anything in life, you should always try your best in everything you do and practice like you perform
