An Open Letter To All The Negativity On My Newsfeed

Lately, I've been seeing lots of negativity, whether it's been on my news feeds, or in my own personal life. Things get tough this time of year with school, and friendships and relationships and any other stressors you may be experiencing. It can be hard to find which way is up when you're struggling to find the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. But I'm here to remind you to take the time to make yourself happy. Take the time you need to breathe and make yourself as happy as you can. If you're having a hard time coming up with ways to make you days a little brighter, here are some suggestions.

Go outside

As the weather is getting warmer, it can really change your whole mood by going outside and just sitting in the sun for a little while. Yes, it may take away some of the time you would have sent studying or woking in the library, but life is too short to not bask in the warmth of the sun for a little while every now and then. Let the sun fill your pores. If you're feeling even more daring, you could even plop yourself right in the grass!

Take a break from social media

As a generation, we spend a lot of time (too much time) with our phones glued to our hands, checking up on the people who may have hurt us, or just watching some stupid videos to waste time. Instead of constantly relying on your phone for entertainment, leave it in your dorm for a little bit. It's good to acknowledge the environment you're surrounded by every day.

Play with puppies or babies

I know I always say this, and it may not be therapeutic for everyone, but I think that playing with these little angels whenever you can is the best way to forget your worries. They don't care if you haven't showered or eaten, they don't care if you're failing 3 classes and haven't slept in a week. They love you anyway, and I can almost guarantee they will make you feel better.

Listen to new music

Most of us are stuck int he music we always listen to and don't always like to change that. but if you're trying to make a new happiness for yourself, it may be beneficial to try something new and see what you like. If you normally only listen to sad country music, try listening to some rock music, or if you listen to mostly catchy pop songs, try some fire rap music for once. Step out of your comfort zone, especially if that's what's causing you stress. maybe you'll even jam out to it and sing your heart out! Let it build up a new personality you didn't even know you had in you.

Practice self-care

It can be hard to remember the essentials as you're stressing out and more than likely feeling like you're falling apart as the days go on. But it's important to remember to take care of yourself. Here is a list that may be helpful (sorry for some of the language it isn't my post), even on those days when you feel lower than low. Remember to eat and drink water, take any medicines you may be on, and sleep as much as you can. Take a hot shower or bath, exercise a little, drink some tea. Take time to care for yourself. You will make it through this tough time, and you will be able to face the world again.

Put yourself first

You may feel like you need to be taking care of the people around you, like you always have. But this is the best time for you to take time for yourself and listen to what your body needs from you in this moment. If you're worried about your friends, check on them, but don't put your needs second to theirs. You won't be very helpful to them if you feel like you're dissociating and pulling away even further by trying to help. They will be ok, and they will be happy when you are able to stand on your own as well to keep doing what you're doing.

Do your best

I know it's stressful and it may feel like everything is falling apart. It feels like there's no end to the dark storm clouds hanging over your head. But I promise you are doing an amazing job. You have to keep pushing on through your tough times. You have to make this your time. Make this your time to make the best situation you possibly can for yourself. Work on baby steps towards improvement every day. Do as much of your work as you can, help yourself get through this as best as you can.

I'm sorry you're in a tough spot right now. I know how it can feel to be buried under all that you have on your shoulders. But I promise it will get easier. You were given this life because you are strong enough to handle what it throws at you. Your thunderstorm will end in time. Your rainbow will light up the sky and your smile will come back again when the stress and worries are fading away. Keep your head up, sunshine. I believe in you, you're doing a great job.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
