The beautiful thing about writing is that you can truly do it anywhere. When I was choosing my major and making a plan for my future possible careers, this aspect is what drew me to writing. English can take you anywhere and everywhere while most jobs tie you down to one location. I am currently 36,000 feet above ground in an aircraft, for example. That’s what got me thinking about this. I usually, almost never, have the opportunity to be writing where I am at this moment. So, it is a special moment, shared between myself, my laptop, keyboard, and the two other passengers beside me. We are all experiencing passage through the air in this unique way.
While I’m up here I’d like to make some observations.
To begin, we don’t seem to appreciate air travel for all that it is anymore. The fact that airplanes were invented and we have the ability to be in the sky like this amazes me every time I’m on a plane. Humans built aircrafts for us to be passengers on to get from one end of the country to another. That’s insane!
Another fun thing to think about is that for however long your flight is, you are in a space with a group of people whom you probably will never share a space with again. This group shares one commonality, we are all headed to the same location. From Chicago, each of us fled the cold air to the warmth of LA.
Being on a plane allows you to look at the world in a new way. There is no experience I can use to explain the feeling of lifting off of the ground and seeing the ground from such a different vantage point A birds-eye perspective gives you ample opportunity to reflect. Reminding us we are a small part of a greater picture. The land we live on is incredibly expansive. It seems even greater while gazing down from above. Next time you are on an airplane look out the window and look at the world in a new way. Think about how magical it is that this moment you hold is completely your own, no one is living this moment like you, soak in the images you view, reflect.
I am incredibly lucky and grateful to be able to sit here and write from seat 21C. I am lucky I get to write and share my life through the platform. Writing is something I will do wherever I go.
If I can do it from way up here, I will write everywhere once I’m back on the ground.
