This past week has been a heartbreaking week for the United States, especially in Charlottesville, Virginia. For those who do not know, there were multiple marched and protests filled with hate and violence. Many white supremacists were disappointed and angry with the city's decision to take down Confederate monuments. Because of this, they decided to put in an intense effort to demonstrate their outrage and stand against the decision. Not only protesting the taking down of the monuments, but also demonstrating their idea of white supremacy.
Last night, I decided to watch Vice's documentary based on the events that happened in Charlottesville and it was one of the hardest and most gruesome things I have ever watched. It was so disgusting to see how willing these people were to act in violent ways due to the fear they have of losing some type of supremacy.
"... will not replace us." Replace you? Who wants to replace you? Nobody wants to replace you. Everybody just wants equality, which you are so unwilling and threatened to give.
I am not a political person. Politics scare me. The fact that I know so little about it scares me even more. But there is something so wrong with the world today. The fact that watching this documentary felt like watching a documentary I would watch in history classes from decades ago is not okay. The fact that we made some progress on equality and it is being disrupted is not OK.I am not a political person. But I am someone that believes in hope. I believe in equality. I believe in love. I believe in keeping the past in the past and the importance of looking toward the future. Why are we moving backward? Why are we fueling ourselves with hate and discrimination? How on earth will that benefit us, in any way?
This can not be the way it is. This can not continue to happen. We can not be quiet. We can not be compliant We must be aware. We must be kind. We must stand for what is right. And we must not let hate overcome.
