When was the last time you went outside just to, you know, go outside ? From being stuck inside at a job all day to being addicted to the newest Netflix series when you get home, it has become normal for the only sunlight in a person's day to be during the short walk from house to car. This lifestyle leads to many problems that plague people daily: depression, obesity, insomnia and vitamin D deficiency, to name a few. The single act of going outdoors can do absolute wonders for the well being of your mind and body.

Let's start with the body. Science tells us that "three quarters of teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D" which is deplorable considering that the easiest way to get it is going outside for a bit of sunshine. Not only will going outside for a short period each day boost your reservoir of this incredibly important vitamin, but it means you have more chances to be active (walking, biking, gardening, sport playing, and swimming, etc.). You'll be getting in both sunlight and exercise, another component of health that people aren't getting enough of. Simply being outdoors (especially if you're exercising) can reduce your stress by reducing cortisol in your blood while combating obesity at the same time. Just think about the quiet susurrus of waves on the beach and you'll know exactly how true this is.

Don't get me wrong, nobody's asking you to run a marathon or spend hours outdoors in the sweltering heat, but why not get a little physical activity in by taking a walk at the park? Go see the sunset. Plant some herbs. Have your morning cup of coffee or your after dinner tea on the porch. Just go outside, breath the fresh air, and clear your mind. After all, when's the last time you heard someone say “man, I really regret taking a walk at the park today”? Another added bonus for your bodily health is that sunlight helps to reset your circadian rhythm, the natural cycle by which our bodies sleep and wake. Sunlight exposure helps to regulate this rhythm, not to mention that exercise will help you sleep better, too.

And let's not forget about the mind. Being outside can be as rewarding for your mental health as it can for your body. Stepping outdoors for a while can help relieve a tired mind. If you've never tried to grow something, try your hand at gardening; It's edifying and mentally calming to watch a little something grow each day, especially if you're struggling with growing yourself. Plus, being plugged in all the time means your mind is constantly multi-tasking and being fed information, pictures, and videos. Being outside lets your brain relax, and can increase concentration for when you do need to be plugged in.

Last but not least, nature can be so humbling. Both on a personal and religious level, being in awe of nature's breathtaking features can truly bring your mind to center. There is nothing like a little silence next to the ocean or on top of a mountain for a little self care and introspection. Nature can be a wonderful place to think and to feel grounded to help your approach the next day anew. So do yourself a favor: go outside.

Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
