Change Your Major, Be Who You Want To Be

Ever since I was young, I believed that I was meant to be a teacher. I believed that there wasn't really a better major for me, and that this was what I was supposed to do. Everyone I ever talked to would always tell me, "Hannah, you work so well with children! You'll be a wonderful teacher some day." It got to the point that when other people asked me about being a teacher, I would just simply reply, "Yeah, I'm pretty good with kids." Not that I am trying to undermine any education majors; I have been through the classes and I can definitely say that it is not a blow-off major. I just never felt in place in any of them. In fact, the only class I think I really enjoyed was the one that I had a great friend in -- and we just laughed the whole time. It was very obvious when I walked into my education classrooms that I kinda stuck out. I was interested and passionate, but nowhere near as passionate as my fellow classmates. So, for the first time in my life, I decided I wanted to change. That I wanted to be who I really wanted to be.

Changing your major is totally scary. In fact, I thought that since I'm going into my third year of college that changing my major would be a complete waste of all the time I put into becoming a teacher. That was the biggest factor in why I was nervous to change in the first place. Luckily for me, a lot of the basics I took for becoming a K-6 generalist education major is what I needed to major in journalism. So, it didn't set me back too far. The thing is, though, you can't fear something as trivial as time. You can't let something like a few semesters set you back from being truly happy with yourself and with your future.

Imagine this: you slave over at least eight semesters of college, study for a major that you're only halfway excited about, only to graduate to find a job you're only halfway excited about. Where's the happy in that? Can you really feel good about yourself for choosing something that isn't going to maximize your happiness? Don't you want to look back on all the years you've lived and be proud that you lived them the way that you truly wanted to?

All I'm saying is that sometimes, you think that you're meant to be something, when in all actuality...you're not. You were given a special talent and a wonderful passion, so use them to your advantage. Make a career out of it. Passion fuels success. You will never be able to fully succeed in something unless you are completely passionate about it. Be who you want to be. Change your major to what you're interested in and learn more about it. You never know, it could change your life.

This is you. This is your time to be completely who you want to be. It's time to get up and make your world the way that you want it to be. It's time to grab life by the antlers and ride. Don't let anyone, besides yourself, decide what path to take for your future -- because they aren't living it -- you are.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
