Each and every one of us is the progeny of millions of years of evolution. We are born to parents we did not choose in an environment we have limited control over. We are influenced by people who come in and out of our lives, and we develop habits and tendencies that often dictate how we think and act. In all of these affairs, one factor remains constant—they are the product of chance.
Chance is the arbiter of our fate. It is the mechanism behind the contingencies of life on Earth and the trivialities that arise from the flux of the universe. Chance is our God and we are its fortunate, or unfortunate, playthings.
Throughout the history of the world, chance has played an impartial role in the development of human lives. But very few have had the dice roll in their favor, which may seem as if chance rewards some and turns its back on many. There has always been a disproportionate number of wealthy individuals to those living in poverty, and there are even fewer people of exceptional talent and ability, in comparison to those who lack the grace and ingenuity to succeed. This is the impetus which drives evolution. Alas, how unfair it seems to be!
Can we all be prosperous and successful if we simply put our minds to it? After all, this is the myth we are often told. Motivation is the drive that separates the winners from the losers. The winners denounce and mock the losers for not having the motivation, the drive to come out on top. But to have that drive—that stimulus for action—one must either have the proper environmental influences or else have a certain composition of the mind which yields steadfastness and obstinance. These two breeders of motivation, however, are not within our locus of control. They are the much sought-after hands dealt by chance.
It is a dreadful and unpleasant truth. Not all will prosper, not all will triumph. Truth is not meant to please us. it is not here to console us and facilitate our desires. We live in an impartial universe, and we are caught in its flux. Only the passage of time will reveal our side of the coin.
