Chance The Rapper is well known to have maintained his love for Chicago through both his words and his actions. The Southside artist recent debuted his newest project collaboration with the Empowerment Plan entitled "Warmest Winter Chicago."
Anyone who lives in Chicago, knows just how bitterly cold it can get in the city especially after the December effect wares off and suddenly it's January and you're no longer pining for snow or chilly weather. Anyone living in Chicago also knows about the large population of homeless people and the fact that when winter comes, a lot of the time they have no place to go.
The goal of the project is to raise $100,000 and create 1000 coats to give to homeless people in Chicago, which saves an estimated 14 lives. The organization's research shows that 7% of the homeless population dies from hypothermia each year and that through distributing 1000 coats they can cut that statistic by 20%. The coat is titled the "EMPWR coat," and it is pretty empowering. The coat is self-heating, water resistant, able to be folded into a bag, and can turn into a sleeping bag. It is pretty much the transformers version of jackets.
So how is Chance The Rapper involved? To motivate Chicagoans to donate to this incredible cause Chance and the Empowerment Plan have offered up Bulls tickets, White Sox tickets, tickets to the Chance show of your choosing, and a chance to meet Chance.
Fans have the option to donate $10, $50, and $100 dollars with variation in what you can potentially win based on how much you donate. If you donate the full $100 dollars you are covering the cost of a single jacket, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.
The end goal of the collaboration of Chance The Rapper and the Empowerment Plan is to bring an Empowerment Plan factory to Chicago. The organization is a non-profit that is based in Detroit seeking to help and serve the homeless. Even better is how the organization lives up to their name through empowering the homeless through hiring "homeless parents from local shelters to become full-time seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and gain back their independence for themselves and for their families." This is definitely an organization we would be fortunate to have in Chicago.
Knowing that you could be saving a life, with the potential to meet Chance is plenty of motivation to donate to Warmest Winter Chicago. The project will be running until January 13th. Click here to donate or learn more about the project.
