It’s probably no coincidence that The Chainsmokers label is called Disruptor Records. Over the course of the past year, they have definitely been disrupting traditional top 40 radio with their signature EDM sound and power pop vocals in the mix. The American DJ duo consists of Drew Taggart and Alex Pall - who have been tearing up the EDM festival scene along with radio to boot...no easy feat.
The “Collage” EP starts of with the dubstep-influenced grooves of “Setting Fires” - which features American electronic brother/sister duo XYLØ on the collab front. The song mixes pop-infused EDM with dubsteppin’ breakbeats set off with XYLØ’s Paige Duddy earnestly singing such lovelorn lyrics as “I can't keep you from harm but I'm set on fire to keep you warm.” Folk-infused indie pop permeates “All We Know” with vocals from American singer-songwiter Phoebe Ryan gliding over the song’s downtempo electronica vibe. Then of course there are the ubiquitous and fabulously all-over-the-radio Top 40 trap-pop gems “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” with vocals from up-and-coming U.S. singers Daya and Halsey, respectively. And Swedish singer Charlee yearns “Let me see the dark sides as well as the bright” on the gorgeous “Insight Out” track that unites it’s dubstep sound with melodic techno sounds.
On January 13 to kick things off into higher gear for 2017, The Chainsmokers have just released “Paris” - a duet between Grammy-nominated songwriter Emily Warren (“Don’t Let Me Down co-writer) and Taggart. Nicely complementing the “Collage” EP, the new single is a downtempo electronica number going in an almost adult contemporary direction by way of its soothing beats set off with 90s-sounding house piano. With a sound that travels everywhere from tropical house to trap as well as pop and beyond, ‘collage’ is certainly a suitable word to describe the music of The Chainsmokers.
