Celebrity Privilege

Celebrities fail to confront other celebrities for their wrongdoings.

Celebrities in Hollywood don't care about victims of sexual assault. If they did, no one would have been kissing Roman Polanski's ass for the past twenty years, and Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey would be in jail. But here we are in 2017 in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct such as rape, molestation, and sexual harassment. These allegations are pointed toward very powerful and successful celebrity figures. Protests against Polanski have taken place in Paris after the unearthing of many reports of Polanski's abuse. Women have publically announced moments of solicitation and misconduct or abuse when it comes to Harvey Weinstein. Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of sexually assaulting him. Spacey announced that he was gay in an attempt to divert attention from the allegations toward him.

Yes, due process is important and having evidence in collaboration with each accusation is crucial for any conviction, but it is disgusting that people like Weinstein and Polanski have been tolerated if not protected by other celebrities for decades.
If anyone robs, steals, cheats, abuses or assaults another human being it is NEVER okay, and action can be taken against those who are the perpetrator of a crime.

It can take place and it does, for regular people.

But somehow these rules don't apply to the Hollywood elites. Is no one bothered by the fact that Hollywood has been harboring perpetrators of sexual assault? Meanwhile, celebrities spend their time chastizing regular non-violent, law-abiding men about how they aren't doing enough to support women. Sounds like celebrity privilege.

Hollywood is a giant among institutions in America and claims to uphold ideas of goodness like virtue and justice -- yet celebrities have remained silent in the face of evil. Disturbing men like Spacey, Polanski and Weinstein are allowed to flourish and are revered by all of Hollywood instead of looked down upon like the scum that they are. In fact, Roman Polanski has been continuously praised by other celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Woody Allen (another creep) instead of being called out for his actions.

Polanski, Spacey, and Weinstein are only a few Hollywood celebrities that have been idolized and protected by others over the years. How many other celebrities are hiding behind their Hollywood status of money and fame? How many celebrities are comfortable turning a blind eye and perpetuating the damaging and disgusting effects that haunt victims of sexual violence? If celebrities actually cared about sexual assault they would have spoken up about it a long time ago. The fact that "everyone knew" about Polanski and Weinstein is disturbing. Celebrities have looked the other way for too long; they are not concerned about the well being of others, and are too privileged to care about victims of sexual assault.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
