For the fourth year in a row, the NBA Finals will feature the Cleveland Cavaliers of the Eastern Conference and the Golden State Warriors of the Western Conference. This is the first time in NBA history that two teams will face each other in the Finals for four straight years.
These familiar foes will make history over the period of a best of seven-game series. Both teams have dominated their conferences the last four years and it’s no wonder they’re back in the Finals in 2018. This will be a promising series and hopefully will be as memorable as the previous three years.
LeBron James will be playing in his 8th straight NBA Finals. He has absolutely dominated the Eastern Conference the past eight years and with two different teams. From 2011 to 2014, James led the Miami Heat to four straight Finals appearances and two championships.
Since his return to Cleveland, he has led his hometown team to four straight Finals and one championship thus far in 2016. The Cavaliers are 1-2 against the Warriors in the Finals the past 3 years. LeBron is on a quest, as his team will take on the defending champions for the fourth time. This will be the biggest challenge of his illustrious career.
The Warriors are already a historic team with multiple future Hall of Famers. They are the dominant team in the west for four years. In 2015 and 2017 Golden State won the NBA Finals. Stephen Curry has been a two-time league MVP in that span. Golden State set a record with 73 wins in a season during the 2015-2016 season. They ended up losing in the Finals to Cleveland in 7 games.
The addition of former MVP Kevin Durant brought them another championship last season. A third championship would make Golden State a dynasty. Head coach Steve Kerr has done a tremendous job in the Bay area. Time will tell how great Golden State will be in the pantheon of NBA history.
2018 marked the first time since 1979 that both Conference Finals went to seven games. The Warriors defeated the Houston Rockets on Memorial Day. The Cavaliers traveled to TD Garden and beat the Boston Celtics. It was Boston’s first home playoff loss during 2018. The Warriors are heavily favored against the LeBron led Cavaliers. Cleveland has had an up and down year. The road to a second championship will not be an easy one. A third title for Golden State would make them an all-time team. Their consistency and the way they play the game has been unparalleled the past decade.
If it were any other league, fans might be fatigued if the same two teams were to meet for the title four straight times. But this rivalry between Cleveland and Golden State has been one for the ages. Their championship levels of play have been good for the league and the sport of basketball. Fans can expect another fun series from the Cavaliers and Warriors.
