Let me start this off by mentioning that I'm currently jamming to the "Cats" soundtrack as I write this.
I haven't been this excited in a long time. The other day I received the best text possible from my sister. She told me that the musical "Cats" is coming back to Broadway this Summer. Honestly, I almost cried. If you never had the opportunity to see this musical, you really missed out on such an amazing show, and I advise you to make a trip to New York this Summer to experience it. Or you could even buy it on DVD and see the greatness. This show by Andrew Lloyd Weber was on the big stage in New York for almost 19 years and also in London for about 21 years. "Cats" is one of the longest running shows in the history of Broadway, how cool is that?
I had the opportunity to see the show when I was about five years old in 2000, right before it was taken off of Broadway. It's not easy to explain the show exactly, but trust me when I saw I was blown away with the amazing acting, dancing, and music. At first, seeing people dressed up as cats was pretty odd to me. After a while, I warmed up to the idea and really enjoyed the show. I became obsessed with all of the different types of cats on stage and their different personalities. For example, my favorite character was definitely Rum Tum Tugger. He was the character that did whatever he wanted and was different from the others. He is the rebel of the group.
Also, another favorite was Victoria. She was a gorgeous white cat and had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. It was interesting to see how all of the cats were so different, ranging from cats that were thieves like Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer or felines that were the outcast like Grizabella, the "glamour cat". There's even an antagonist, Macavity, that might actually scare you when he appears.
Throughout the show, 24 different cats come together to sing many different songs about most of the characters. If you haven't seen or even heard of this musical, I'm sure you've at least heard the song "Memory", sung by the character Grizabella. These songs really show emotion and passion in this musical, and it's why I fell in love with it. If you're a big "Cats" fan like myself, you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you haven't, I encourage you to look into it.
This Broadway show is such an amazing and powerful experience, and I hope that you're as excited as I am for it to come back to the stage. It's a show for people of all ages and will truly blow you away. Whether you go see it on Broadway or watch it on DVD, it truly is one of the best musicals ever made and I hope you love it like I do!
