I feel like I've been procrastinating writing this for quite some time now (it's not even a big deal, sometimes you just can't put thoughts into words) and I truly think it's because I can't describe the admiration and respect I have for him.
Last summer, I saw Vogue magazine post about Casey Neistat at the Met Gala. I had seen his name around the internet before, including pictures from his wedding (why did his wedding get a feature in Vogue? I couldn't understand), but never looked in depth about who he was or what he did. That curiosity turned into me binge-watching 10-minute vlogs about a man's life who I have never met, may probably never meet in the future.
The question everyone would bring up to me when I mentioned I was watching his vlogs, not a show on Netflix, was why?
I think the greatest thing about Casey's vlogs is that it isn't just someone holding a camera and explaining their daily activities. Rather, they're like small movies with sunset time lapses over the New York City skyline, it's a guy riding an electric skateboard through traffic while holding a camera and drinking fresh juice, it's someone showing small moments with family and friends.
Not only are these vlogs chock full of insane drone footage (does he really just stop his car on the highway and let out a drone just to get the shot??), but he explains life and how he's gone through everything. He became a dad at 16, worked in restaurant kitchens and other odd jobs to build himself up before he could afford a house for him and his kid. He knows what setbacks feel like (dude was in a terribly bad motorcycle accident, was told he wouldn't run again, then went and ran a marathon two years later) and what it's like to come back from them.
He's had a few viral videos, which I make sure to tell everyone about. One of them, was this video about a $21,000 first class seat.
He didn't even mean for it to go viral -- it's just his style. Sometimes, he plans the perfect video, like when he snowboarded through the streets of NYC with the police.
He got 2 million subscribers... in six months. That's a feat some YouTubers try to achieve in at least two years. There's truly something for everyone in his vlogs -- whether used to relax at the end of the day (myself, and my friend), or want to know what kind of cameras he uses (he includes links in his description for everything he uses), or just to see something motivational or hear advice that you just need to do what you love and everything will fall into place.
Currently, Casey is working with CNN to turn his company, Beme, into something amazing and has the Samsung corp in his back pocket (he really just asked for a new silver Galaxy S8 phone...just because he wanted one). There's so much more to look forward to from him and I can't wait to see it all.
And, don't forget: do what you can't.
