Summer is the perfect season. The sun is always shining, the breeze is soft and warm against our skin, and there’s more light than ever before. It has a way of uplifting our mood and we find ourselves smiling more often. The summer is for fun, for relaxing and for whirlwind romances.

I find that every crazy and daft experience I’ve had has happened when I was younger. This isn’t an exception. I was 14 years old when I got back in touch with an old friend. Keep in mind that I was already dating someone at this point.

A small backstory for this guy. We met when I was even younger, however, we grew apart because he was a few years older than me and had more freedom. My parents weren’t the type to allow me to meet people without meeting them first (something I thank them for now). I was shy about that fact so I kept making excuses as to why we couldn’t meet which eventually led to us parting ways. About six months into the relationship I was in at the time, he messaged me again.

There were some mixed feelings, ones I didn’t understand since I never thought I had any serious feelings for this guy. I was suddenly filled with longing for our past friendship which is why I even continued messaging him back. My boyfriend was a camp counselor and was barely able to speak to me during the time. I was in constant contact with the guy from before my boyfriend left for the camp.

I know. It’s horrible and I suck for it.

This part is kind of hazy since it was a couple years ago, but I do remember telling my boyfriend that I lost feelings for him. He was out of the picture so I was able to freely pursue this fling.

NOW, I knew it was merely a fling for the very fact that it began around the summertime and I honestly had no intention of pursuing it past there. I’m aware that he believed it as well.

We saw each other a couple times during the summer. It was a highly romantic and passionate experience, I must admit. There was no question of moving forward too fast because it didn’t matter. Come September, it wouldn’t matter anymore.

I doubt we ever said I love you, it never got to that point. We were never able to get enough of each other. It’s like the weather just made him look more beautiful.

He was a beautiful man. He had short and straight hair. Light hazel eyes that turned the prettiest green in the sunlight. He had a lithe and toned body. His smile was cute and bright. A very beautiful man, indeed.

It was a cathartic experience. It was freeing. There were no expectations. We focused on having fun and enjoying one another in the hot weather.

As expected, the summer came to an end and so did our relationship. It was tearful and difficult because it brought a lot of satisfaction to both our lives. We were on different paths, there was no way to make it work past then. To this day, we’ve never spoken.

Now, it’s simply a nice memory. I can remember the feeling of the weather, of his lips and the smoothness of his skin. I rarely think of it now and I can only assume it will leave my memory over time.

If you don’t already have a partner that you’ll be getting cuddly with in the summer, summer flings aren’t shameful. They’re an experience. Don’t be sad if it ends because you’ll only look back at it with a certain fondness. The most important thing is that you enjoy the summer and the rest of your life like it’s the last day you’ll have on earth. Life is an experience.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
