In a generation where it's cool to be unsocial and stay in your room and watch Netflix all day, it's time we close our laptops and live in the moment.
I am so guilty of wanting to shut myself in my room and watch Netflix (hello, "One Tree Hill") but as a generation, we are slowing becoming hermits. How did it become cool to say, "I watched a whole season of "Gossip Girl" yesterday."
I tend to use excuses like, "Oh, I had a test today, I deserve to watch one more episode." Or my personal favorite, "I'll go exercise after I watch this episode." Too many times we don't do stuff because it isn't in our planners, our hair isn't fixed and the weather has the potential to be bad.
Erma Bombeck once wrote in "The Moment Won't Wait For You," "We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect."
"I'll go out with my friends... as soon as I finish this episode."
"I'll eat that piece of cake... when I lose twenty pounds."
"I'll go on vacation with my family... as soon as I graduate college."
"I'll buy my own house... as soon as I get married."
"I'll start going to church... once I have a family."
"I'll visit my parents... as soon as my children are potty trained."
"Once I get my kids out of college, I'll buy the boat I've always wanted!"
As we get older, our promises to ourselves just get longer while our days keep getting shorter.
Carpe Diem is a good motto to live by, especially when it is supplemented with Psalm 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it."
So live life on the edge! Eat that extra piece of cake!! You need and deserve it!
